Unfortunately, the topic of rape is not one of the issues for which previous positions are discussed. For this particular subject, such a discussion is especially relevant given the changes which occurred in both English law and practice between the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period.

The research of Barbara Hanawalt Crime and Conflict in English Communities, and John Carter Rape in Medieval England into rape in the late English medieval period provides much necessary information which is not included by Eales. Nonetheless, such relevant background information is frequently given by Eales. However, when dealing with such a topic as the lives of women, which was often not considered worthy of mention in written documents, it is necessary for scholars to draw upon less conventional sources such as literary works mentioned briefly , art, architecture and archeological remains.

The importance of such evidence needs to be stressed and it is especially salient to mention these sources in a book which is geared towards researchers just embarking on this field of study. Nowhere in this book is mention made of the theories of Michel Foucault concerning the history of sexuality in the early modern period.

Such ideas are particularly relevant to a discussion of past ideas about women since women of this era were generally categorized according to their sexuality, as either virgins, wives, widows or whores. The history of sexuality is becoming increasingly popular amongst historians during the past few decades. Nonetheless, this book is a must for both students and established scholars alike. An excellent bibliography is also included for those wishing to pursue further research and the discussion of historical sources is also very useful, at least as far as the more traditional sources of written evidence are concerned.

Eales highlights the connection between gender, class, religious, marital and age divisions in early modern society and is careful to stress that any research into the lives of women in this era must be further distinguished along these lines, noting that such variables have not always been considered in the past. It is hoped that fellow scholars will make ample use of this book, Women in Early Modern England, , both in their own research and in the education of aspiring academics.
