When Jesus said that "the kingdom of heaven is at hand" Matthew 4: The king is always the highest representative of a kingdom, so when the king is present, the kingdom is also present. We can see this in a couple of scriptures: Here, God's Kingdom is defined as Jesus' exercise of His power. The King, in exerting His authority over unclean spirits, displays the reign or the rule of God.

This can also be seen in Mark 9: And He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see the kingdom of God present with power. Jesus tells them they will see the Kingdom of God present with power, and within a week they see Him transfigured. His being revealed to them in glory was a demonstration of the power of God's Kingdom. Even without the glory, what stood among them was still the Kingdom of God. Because He is the King, as the central figure of the Kingdom, wherever He went, the Kingdom was present.

In the book of Acts, the message of the Kingdom is inextricably tied to the central Being in that Kingdom Acts 8: To take this a step further, where the King abides in any person or where a person is in Christ, the Kingdom is also present. We can now apply this principle to Christ's statements.

This world's forceful and self-willed people "seize" that Kingdom as they would a fortified city, through opposing its citizens in some way. Similarly, in Luke In other words, the gospel message was not popular. It bore fruit in those who were being called Isaiah Others hoped that the kingdom of Judah would be restored, and they were probably content to wait and watch this Man as He went about—as curiosity-seekers rather than opponents.

However, for those who had a vested interest in maintaining the political and religious status quo, the gospel was seen as a threat, and those linked with the Kingdom of Jesus Christ were the object of all manner of resistance and persecution, both before and especially after His death. Notice, for example, Jesus' words in Matthew For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

There was such animosity that the King Himself suffered the most awful violence that has ever been perpetrated: We face a similar circumstance today. Even nominal Christians suffer Muslim persecution in one part of the world , while others are blocked, ridiculed, and constrained by secularists and humanists in another.

True Christianity is denounced as being heretical and cultic, and its adherents suffer violence in various ways. This violence does not have to be physical violence. It can be verbal.

It can be passive. It can be persecution or opposition in any number of ways. Wherever the spirit of Satan is present, his children make the way difficult for those who are in Christ or who are being drawn to Him. They reject the royal law of the Kingdom and ridicule God's sovereignty. They sneer at His inspired Word. The violence that the Kingdom suffers will vary by degrees, but it is found wherever the ruler of this world has influence. This is why Jesus says in John I think it's first time in a very long time that we are looking to bridging the gap between new readers and long-time readers.

We are telling stories that are accessible to people who've never read a comic, or aren't familiar with these characters, but we don't turn our backs on what's made these characters great in the first place.

The truth is, in all storytelling, there are only a few places you can go. This isn't about finding a new plot, or inventing a new bad guy.

This first volume successfully unleashes a new world within the DC universe with an enthralling tale from Judd Winick while Ben Oliver's illustrations look like something out of a European graphic novel or Heavy Metal magazine. And quite nicely too I might add.

I'd say the art really adds a nice level of depth to it all. I'm looking forward to the second volume to see where the story progresses. Also, love the sketchbook section at the end. Great stuff so far. Splinter Species The New Review "With the marrying of both art style and story concepts, the Animal Man and Swamp Thing creative teams have set up a crossover that I can't wait to read.

Much of the forward moment set up in the first two volumes of what has turned out to be one very LONG story gets frittered away by endless action scenes. The battle in this volume seems to go on forever and involve a cast of thousands. Or at least a lot of horrific versions of the DC Universe. There are some cool things, but they get lost in the narrative.

Then, when Lemire throws in Frankenstein Agent of S. Again, there are light points to enjoy, such as when Maxine starts manifesting animal powers like her dad, but even that bit of lighter fare gets eclipsed by the ever-increasing darkness. The tale is bleak and almost hopeless. Superheroes like the Justice League are turned into monstrous creatures. The Swamp Thing storyline almost invades the Animal Man arc to the point that Buddy Baker and his concerns all but vanish here and there.

It was interesting, but I had to work too hard to figure out where Batgirl and the Batbot came from or how they got there. There was simply too much going on, and not all of those events took place in this graphic novel. As to the Rotworld saga, it grinds to a close in this volume of Animal Man but it leaves emotional destitution in its wake. I know writing is supposed to elicit an emotional reaction on part of the reader, but this one is just a total downer. This entry exhausted me on several levels.

One person found this helpful. This has been building since the first issue, and even the first issue in Swamp thing, but you don't need to read it to understand this. The epic conclusion to a fantastic horror arc had me glued to my seat just wanting to turn the next page faster and faster. The story telling is so spot on and clean and tight that I marvel at everything from the writing to the art. The only downside I found was the inclusion of the swamp thing issues, while I do think we needed them, I found their panel placing and splash page vs two page spreads to be rather confusing.

Also, if you wanted you could just pick this up without reading the first two volumes, but I'd highly recommend reading the first two anyway: So it has finally come to this. The eventual crossover with both characters over the shared villains known as the Rot finally has happened after waiting so long and it has become an all out war over the fate of the planet.

Does Rotworld make for a triumphant conclusion? Not really, but it's still an action packed ride none the less.
