The Heir: Windham Series, Book 1 (Unabridged) by Grace Burrowes on iTunes

And that is the emphasis of the entire book. I have rarely been so disappointed, having absolutely loved Burrowes' Lady Louisa's Christmas Knight, I was expecting another great read. Hard to believe the incredible contrast. Christmas Knight had a believable, interesting plot, wonderfully drawn characters, good dialogue and was a charming, romantic story. This was anything but charming; instead, it was maddening and frustrating. The author is certainly capable of writing well, but this effort was marred by the egregious number of times we read of the Earl eating marzipan and drinking lemonade - with lots of sugar.

Have I mentioned that the Earl took an extraordinary amount of sugar in his lemonade, as he enjoyed marzipan while noticing the daisy in his budvase, set up on his luncheon tray? Believe me, I'm not exaggerating how distracting and annoying this obsessive reiteration became - ruining any interest I tried to retain in the rather hazy plot. I felt the mystery involving the heroine was anticlimactic and the villains were very poorly done.

When villains are too overdrawn they don't seem very threatening, just caricatures. Compared to Christmas Knight, this book was disjointed, kind of fuzzy and even the resolution wasn't satisfying. I am so glad that I didn't read this book first! I hate to give a negative review to an author who so delighted me with a prior book, but in this case, I truly can't rave about The Heir. An earl falls for his mysteriously ladylike housekeeper, who, even more mysteriously, falls for him, rejecting his honorable intentions but accepting the less honorable ones.

The story is otherwise well written, free of gross anachronisms and having lovely, sizzling romantic scenes. One person found this helpful. This is one of my least favorite historic romances ever. At the romance level, I failed to grasp any deep connection between the hero and heroine in the book, which was bad enough. The plodding pace was also not to my liking -- I am not sure any book took me as long to read and I am a rapid reader. Rarely have I skimmed and skipped pages just to get through it, and at the end, I felt complete relief that the torture was over.

The only reason I stuck with it was because I was at home for the holidays and had nothing better to do. Had it been any other time of the year, I would have abandoned it mid-stream. The only entertaining character is the old Duke who had some complexity, spine, and humor. The rest are largely one-dimensional creations. Meanwhile, I was distracted by the quantity of food, marzipan, and sweetened tea and lemonade consumed in the book. Honestly, I think the entire range of characters would have likely died early deaths from either obesity or diabetes if they were not creations of fiction.

Oh and I am not sure that "muffins" are a historically or culturally correct choice from among the endless litany of food items eaten by the characters in this time period. At the end of the day, this book is for bored housewives who want to ready an easy and unrealistic love story wrapped in some "loose" historic garb, and who want to vicariously eat copious amounts of food. It is not for those of us seeking well written romance literature.

On the other hand, clearly the author, Grace Burrowes, is popular so she has a constituency. Good for her and my assessment should not stop someone else from reading the book and seeing how it resonates.

But this was just not for me. I enjoyed this book very much. The lead characters and all surrounding characters are very well-written, each with their own personalities The hero is strong, caring, kind, noble They are perfect for one another, and it has been fun to read this whole awakening to one another.
