This is a "period piece" - although published only in , it has the feel of a tale written at the time it's set into. The atmosphere is so well limned that it's hard to think otherwise. And while the book is essentially a police procedural, I'd recommend it to anyone who might find interest in that time and place in history.

If the mystery were set in New York, for example, I think it would feel very familiar. Apr 19, Shirley rated it liked it. The culture clash was more interesting than the mystery. I read this book based only on its title and got more than I bargined for. The author packed a great deal of action, adventure and intrigue into a small novel. It's an excellent read. This one was disappointing and for the life of me, I can't see how this particular book warrants all the five-star and four-star ratings. The writing is generally fun and easy to read, but there's just way too much filler and not really that much plot.

At one point I nearly quit reading, which would be a "first" for me for a DeMille book. Although you learn quite a lot of theories about TWA , essentially the story is just one very long search for a couple that may have filmed the crash. Unfortunately the search goes on far, far too long and in the end, nothing happens. There's a coverup but never any explanation why there needed to be a coverup, and what is "revealed" cannot be reconciled with the official report or the other facts that are given.

It doesn't matter, though, because the ending is telegraphed the minute you read that the flight went down in and he refers to attending a memorial for the fifth year anniversary.
