Like Gombrowicz, Witkowski has a flair for the absurd, such as tabloid reports of UFOs on the beach or a sudden attack of pubic lice. Even more to the point, both Gomborwicz and Witkowski are intrigued by the clash of traditional and contemporary values. No fats, no fems. This is not to say that the novel dwells in the golden age fallacy. And why not live in the spotlight, if only for a moment?
This is one of the funniest books I have read this year. It does a great job at reporting on adventures from a sexual underground in a communist reality. It also has lots of well-written commentary about contemporary life and politics.

The brief story of a Milan from Slovakia living in Vienna is probably the best part of the book. Later, somewhere after page the book becomes a little too much of the same. It is interesting how a sexual underground mirrors reality and makes it even a bigger comedy that it already is! I am sure the publication of the book came as a shock to Polish readers. People never thought that for all these years they actually shared their towns with a bunch of rather shameless queers!
There are some issues with the translation the translator attached a few pages of explanation at the end of the book , mostly connected with unknown cigarette brands and names of small towns. I fear that a reader not familiar with the geography of western Poland might feel a little lost. Still, I think that much of the writing is unquestionably brilliant. This book has been praised in several British newspapers and received alot of acclaim elsewhere too but it is not an overly enjoyable read due to its constant repetition of barely discernable incidents.

It's over use of the female pronoun to describe the gay men who are all given women's names in the story also became tedious. Set in Poland the book changes back and forth between modern 21st Century Poland with its increasingly open gay scene and the underworld gay scene of the 's and 80's. Its underlying fascination for me was the regret the aging gay men had for the old gay scene under the Communist regime where the "grunts" supposedly straight men and Russian soldiers were easy game.
The reminiscences in this book were collected by the author who interviewed the older gay men who lived during the 's and 80's and to me these characters, as one previous reviewer has already stated, all tended to merge together into one voice. In several crucial passages, the denizens of this new, shinier Europe collide with his chosen representatives of the older, darker order. In one cruel and deliciously unreasonable passage a buffed-up muscle-boy hobbies: Turning on this hapless representative of bourgeois "liberation" the full linguistic force of his anti-heroines' scorn, Witkowski makes it clear that contemporary culture abandons at its peril the heritage of survival tactics which his queens cultivated through the dark years. Faced with exclusion and brutality, they kept themselves alive through an unholy marriage of desperation and imagination, constructing an alternative reality that could teach the younger generation a thing or two about empowerment.
Or, as a queen called Paula puts it more succinctly in the novel's closing pages: So, to all readers who might feel either intimated or guilty about enjoying the company of some very old-fashioned queens from a country you're probably more used to providing your plumber than your literature, reassure yourself that this hilarious, scabrous, sharp-eyed, sharp-tongued and brilliantly translated novel is essentially and life-enhancingly political — if by politics we mean who gets to live, and how.
