I was so glad to find a continuation of the characters Alex and Alexander--a couple whose entire lives revolve around Thoroughbreds on the farm and at the track--and wherever they're in need of rescuing.

I like the fact that Alex is a flawed human like the rest of us--sometimes insecure, sometimes stubborn, and sometimes whimsical when it comes to horses. Her mothering instincts are solely for her four-footed "children," so when year-old Wendy intrudes on her well-ordered life she's thrown for a loop at first. Then she discovers a different side of herself. This is a funny, heart-warming read any time of year--and a great holiday gift for your horse-loving friends. One person found this helpful.

Maybe I'm a complete sap, but I love these stories! A great read with wonderful characters that resonate with honest emotions and horsie realities. I highly recommend reading all of Reinert's books, twice! One of my favorite lines " I could tell. Confidence for absolutely no reason, that was something I missed about my pre-equestrian childhood. Before I found out that falling off hurts and that someone always knows more than you. This was just a lovely story for so many reasons.

Enjoyed the characters human and horse. Its always good to see more of the "back stretch" written Natalie Reinert. She has a very good understanding of that particular life and a good way to get it across to people who have not had a chance to see it for themselves. The section on the grass roots racetracks was good. On the day of the Purge when Alex and Aaron were 13, Alex was Unwanted as he expected, and Aaron was admitted to the university for Wanteds. Alex was put on a bus with the other Unwanteds, including his best friend at the time, Meghan Ranger , a girl named Lani Haluki with whom he becomes fast friends, and Samheed Burkesh , a boy he dislikes at that time.

Apprehensive, Alex enters the mansion and explores his room, which is full of art supplies and similar conveniences. Alex is then introduced to his art teacher, Ms. Octavia an alligator with eight tentacles, otherwise known as an "octogator". Alex begins to learn about art and quickly discovers a talent for it. As he continues his training, his friends Meghan, Lani, and Samheed join the Magical Warrior class, which is a class where teachers tell the students how to use their skills as weapons for defense. Alex doesn't know this and isolates himself, breaking contact with his friends and skipping classes.

Today realizes there's nothing he can do about the bond between Alex and Aaron, he allows Alex to begin Magical Warrior Training. During this time, Alex discovers a talent for magic and also develops subtle romantic feelings towards Lani. After using an invisibility spell during Magical Warrior Training, Alex kisses Lani on the cheek, flustering both of them.

Later, Alex finds Mr.

Today prepares Alex for mage duties. He believes Alex has great magical abilities and leadership potential. Today planned to have a holiday, he made Alex his temporary replacement and told him some of his secrets. This sparks the interest that there may be other islands and Alex's friends planned to have an adventure. They go to Warbler, the 'Island of Silence', since the majority of the citizens on the island has a thick band made of metal thorns that weaved in and out of their necks making them not able to speak.

When his friends went missing, Alex and Simber go out to the nearest island, Warbler, to seek out their friends. They found Meghan and as they were on their way back, Simber froze and fell into the sea. The crash sent Alex and Meghan into the sea. At the end of the book, Alex finds that Aaron had killed Mr. Today, using the 'heart attack' spell Alex had created.

He falls in love with Sky, which leaves him confused about his feelings, due to the fact that he feels that he is still in love with Lani. Then, he and Henry went and saved Claire after Haluki managed to get himself through the tube in his house. When he got back, he removed Meghan's thorns using the 'Dissipate' spell Ms.

Afterwards, he removed Sky's and Crow's as well, after some convincing. Later, after much planing and preparation, he gathered all the statues and head out to the Island of Silence using the ship from the Museum of Large. The ship was actually an enchanted ship and it instead headed towards another island, a volcanic island that Will periodically sink beneath the sea. Sky calls it the Island of Pirates.

Horsepeople will like the overall accuracy of this book--we've all known critters like the ones Reinert describes. For non-horsepeople, Reinert clearly and accurately explains horse-specific terminology and techniques without breaking the narrative flow, which is a tough thing to do.

Dec 28, Tudor Robins rated it it was amazing. Natalie Reinert has that rare and, to me, very valuable talent of writing day-to-day stories even if the day-to-day does take place in very interesting settings that make you want to keep turning the pages. This author writes them very well! May 07, S. Matthews rated it really liked it. This novella is a glimpse into the life on the racetrack and the emotions that only someone who loves horses could understand. I tend to shy away from first person POV, but it worked in this regard. I think it is probably the best way to tell the story. The protagonist clearly loves her life in Florida, but anyone that has wondered if they are living the life they are supposed to can relate to her struggles.

I really enjoyed the read and will definitely check out Other People's Horses. Really loved this book. As a show barn groom back in the 80's heyday on the Arabian circuit, it was fun to find a book that was as much about the grind of that life as the love for the horses themselves. Took me back to a time when I gave up that life but never the horses. Still have nine head to keep me humble every day.

Enjoy this one if you want realism and love and adventure by someone else who has been there. Aug 07, Linda rated it really liked it Shelves: Great debut short novel about a young woman trying to find her place in life. Her passion has always been horses, but it that all there is?

With lots of realistic details about training young racehorses from an author who knows her stuff, this story will especially appeal to horse lovers. Reinert has a great feel for language and words, and I look forward to reading more of her work! Sep 12, Bellarush rated it liked it.

I really enjoyed the voice, and certainly can relate to the whole overworked horse person thing though I would take winters in Florida over winters in Ontario! I dream of the winters I spent in Florida when I'm night watching mares in February snowstorms! Started out with great promise but came up a little short for me.

Nice to read a reasonably authentic view of the TB world, though. Jun 09, Jenn rated it really liked it. I've had this for awhile and kept not reading it because I am not a fan of horseracing. But I finally gave in, and it was quite wonderful, actually! Jan 10, Leah rated it really liked it.

This book did just what the first book in a series needs to do. It interested me enough to inspire me to purchase 2! Apr 20, Barb rated it it was ok. Not much of a story. Not much real insight into horsemanship. More like a blog or essay about a cathartic experience. Sep 12, Robin rated it really liked it. Solid horse racing book with intimate backstretch details that ring true to a horseman.
