Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This book has given me my answers to years of over eating. The book has helped me to identify my food issues as a brain wring problem that I can choose to support or challenge. What I loved about this book is the part about perfection. I'm keeping a journal as I go along my pathway to recovery and will share this with the author after 3 months. I feel liberated, understood and proud of myself.

Something I haven't felt in which a long time I've also used the same technique to quit smoking on the same day as I implemented Gillians strategy. It's only day 3 but it's working and I feel great. I have found this useful and I am definitely earing less by changing my grazing habit to three solid mealtimes and planning quantities I cook so I don't cook too much. My partner said I looked 'trim' the other day as a result which I have taken as a massive compliment!

The only reason I have given this four rather than five stars is due to the way it is written - she quotes sources such as The Sun and for me, I found it slightly written in a Sun type manner which irritated me a bit for a reference type book. However, I think the theories are brilliant and I think it has permanently changed my relationship with food and how I eat.

I bought this together with the book Gut which explains what physically happens to the body when you eat and think the two of them have worked perfectly together in improving my general health and well-being. As someone who has dealt with food A very good read. As someone who has dealt with food addiction for a very long time I feel this played an important role in my recent rediscovery of personal willpower which has allowed me to ignore my addiction and finally have the courage and strength to say "no" to unnecessary food.

I very much liked that it didn't focus on fad dieting or any such false nutritional nonsense and instead gave sound very sound advice and info. Also, for a little background, I have been a compulsive overeater and struggled with bulimia for several years in my past.

    I have also been class 2 obese before because of these problems with food and suffered from compromised mobility and pre diabetes as a result, so this is not my first rodeo with reading about how to control my eating. Pretty much the only thing I took issue with in the book was how Gillian proliferated the claims that wheat and similar grains are bad for you and cause health problems.

    As of now there's no conclusive clinical evidence that supports this claim and it is only supposition at this point for anyone other than the small sample of the population who actually suffers from Celiac disease. Sure, overdoing any macronutrient will cause an imbalance of one's diet, but I think she was diving a little too far into pseudoscience, and I don't respect her credibility to comment on such matters as she is an expert in habit change rather than nutrition.

    I will leave the caveat that she did not condone totally forbidding oneself of grain products, but she spent a lot of time going over why she thinks most people should cut them out. For a book that claims not to be a diet book, sounded pretty diet bookish. That being said, I took a lot of valuable things away from this book. I would, if you're concerned about scientific validity, focus on the mental attitude aspect of the book. I like how she aims to take the focus away from your appearance and shift it to your self esteem, specifically regarding your ability to control your eating.

    Excess weight is comorbid with a lot of health problems, but if you are focusing chiefly on that result alone and how you look as a consequence , it is more likely to backfire because once the weight is lost the motivation to maintain these habits fades. In that way we can learn to coexist with the addiction and work through them one step at a time. Eating less — isn't a book about diets.

    Nowadays, few of those who constantly struggle with excess weight, realize the reasons why it appears in the first place or why it always comes back.

    But your main aim should be something else -- not the size of your jeans and a six-pack on your belly. Also, Riley's book led me to the idea that products that don't contain almost any healthy elements for our organisms like chips and other fast-food should be sold and promoted like alcohol and cigarettes. It seems that unhealthy food is not as bad for you, but reality is harsher.

    Why is alcohol promoted with a warning about its bad influence, but when buying "Bounty" chocolates we only hear about "the taste of paradise"? I would recommend this book to anyone who used food as a "cure" from stress and sad feelings, dissatisfaction, loneliness and emptiness. Riley also draws your attention to the fact that even if you eat two buckets of green salad to satisfy your crave for food , it doesn't mean you're eating healthy and that you are not a victim of this unpleasant food addiction.

    Riley's book is my favorite book about emotional eating. Her recommendations are simple and straightforward.     The book outlines clearly what addictive eating us, how we fool ourselves when we are doing it and what we can do about it. Focusing purely on weight loss for appearance sake only will not work. We need to raise our self esteem and eat healthily through choice.
