There are key verses that show that. On the pure writing side.. John uses the word "just" too much.

I am sorry, but Mr. Anderson is guilty of the same sins of interpretation he finds in others. He should remember that Occam's Razor when he relies on the Bible to say what he wishes it to say, not what it actually says. His argument is a convoluted appeal that when the bible says "devil" it really means "Adam" or man. I sought out this book because I, along with Mr. Anderson, believe that the role of the satan is poorly misunderstood by many Christians. Unfortunately, I believe this work simply adds to the confusion. If you are going to argue there is no devil you are going to have to go outside of the Bible to do so; instead of tying verses spread throughout the Bible in a string to build a fragile house of cards.

I highly recommend this book. It challenges your thinking and the way he wrote it made it very easy to read. I could barely put it down and when I finished I wished there were more to read. It got me started in thinking about things about Satan and has caused me to want to study more on the subject. And thats always a good thing. I'm sure the subplot about John's dying mother was sweet and all, but what did it have to do with anything?

Why write this is novel format? I'm not saying I didn't like it. I enjoyed some of his unique interpretations of passages I've always read through the lens of Tradition. But this was just not a good vehicle for getting these points across. Bad enough that you chose the wrong medium for your theories. Worse that it's full of punctuation, spelling, and grammatical errors.

One person found this helpful. Don't waste your money on this book. Invest in a nice leather-bound bible and do not let it touch this book or else it might contaminate it.

THE APOSTOLIC AGE

Now all that can be witnessed is people denying the existence of Satan hijacking the sites with this one-trick pony topic and killing interest in such a deep and expansive eschatology. Its amusing to see these people claiming they are Satan, I'll give 'em that. First it was Covenant Creation, now its this. It seems to be the unpardonable sin to believe that Satan exists as a person to these people, there is simply no arguing, even in light of the Scriptures. If you can't agree with their every demand, they will make sure to tell you that you "don't understand the bible".

As if this is the central issue in the bible. Their fruitless words and deeds prove as much. John Anderson has written this book in a very easy to read format. In 54 years of preaching, I can only recall three books that were interesting enough to read without laying them down. John's book is one of them. Of course, this latter standard rules out the possibility that any document can or should be added to the Bible now.

THE LIFE AND TEACHINGS OF JESUS CHRIST

So, when it comes to considering whether a newly discovered document like the Gospel of Judas should be made part of the Bible, it fails on every ground. Although it claims to be from Judas one of the Twelve , there are good historical reasons for concluding that it did not not least of which is that Judas hung himself shortly after he betrayed Jesus, who was then crucified; Matt. Furthermore, the teaching of this book is gnostic and contradicts most essential Christian doctrines. And, finally, it was never used by the church and was actually condemned.

There are no other books that should be considered as part of the Bible. Even if, theoretically, an authentic letter from the apostle Paul should be discovered, as awesome as such a discovery might be, we would not consider making it part of the Bible. It was simply not used by all the churches over time.

What we currently possess in our Bibles is the completed canon of Scripture. It is exactly as God intended it and is the living, active, and powerful Word of God. This post is an excerpt from Clinton E. Its Origin, Development, and Significance Oxford: Clarendon, , Clinton Arnold enjoys teaching, speaking and writing on various aspects of the New Testament. Browse Becoming Biola Bravo! The Problem of People Wanting to Add to the Bible Irenaeus explicitly said that the gnostics wrote many different gospels and books, but he, along with all other church leaders of the second through fourth centuries, regarded them as grossly inaccurate and harmful in what they taught. The Problem of People Wanting to Take Books Out of the Bible One of the earliest challenges to the commonly recognized collection of books that the churches were using as Scripture came from a man named Marcion.

But there were also some objective and rational standards: Notes [1] Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.
