He is hot on the trail of a smuggling ring, led by the notorious diamond smuggler, Taffy Marr Wright's case is related, which means, of course, that it is I suppose diamonds alone are no longer enough for Marr--he is branching out a bit Aunt Gertrude is against the whole idea of this "my nephews behaving like criminals! What else is new? Frank and Joe journey out to Mr. Wright's house, obtain the invention, and are in the process of leaving when the "bad guys" break in Bayport's Town Hall Clock chimes that it is midnight!

Frank and Joe, using their never to be seen again--before or since secret hand signals take the two thugs out in only a two-punch fight! Frank and Joe, promising themselves that they will "explain it all" to Police Chief Collig someday, head to the party the next night--after securing the invention in the spare tire well of their car What exactly is this invention, you ask? Please work with me Anyway, the next evening Frank and Joe attend the party at Chet's and take the girls outside for some hot cheek-kissing action Joe spies someone "tampering" with their car--and gets himself kidnapped Once again, the Town Hall clock strikes midnight!

The whole gang is in pursuit--throughout the night--but Joe has vanished Shades of The Missing Chums Frank returns home the next morning, and informs his mother of Joe's kidnapping This sequence is very well done by FWD At that moment, Aunt Gertrude bursts into the room and reacts predictably: However, she also manages to provide them with a clue In Bayport, a blond-hair dude named Chris called her an "old whaler" while discussing caves with a friend of his Frank mollifies his aunt by explaining he doubts Chris was referencing her--and this may be a clue to where Joe is!

Frank calls an emergency meeting of the gang They take out their boats and hit Barmet Bay, frantically searching for Joe amongst the caves of Barmet Bay's coastline A dense fog rolls in--another great sequence, here!

Even Biff is shaken--he has had harrowing experiences in the Bay's fog before However, the gang continues on, undaunted, scouring the caves until they find Joe The bad guys arrive Chet Morton shows us once again why you cannot spell "Morton" without "Moron" The good guys barely escape being shot up Joe is okay after a few days of rest And proceed to get stuck in a subway tunnel, running for their lives from an oncoming train Friends, we aren't halfway through this book Frank and Joe then wind up yes, they survived the subway washing dishes to earn their supper--funny sequence here They call their Mother, who immediately sends them money Good thing Aunt Gertrude didn't answer the phone, huh?

Frank then proceeds to get beaten up in an alley He's okay, though, and the two brothers tail Chris to an Import Company Journeying back to Bayport, the brothers get a lead on Taffy Marr, thanks to Frank posing as a criminal, and "visiting" a member of Marr's gang in jail Marr, not so shockingly, is working at a jewelry store He escapes before the police can arrest him A "tip" leads the brothers to an abandoned boat in the harbor Frank and Joe almost get killed For only like the fifth time this story! The guy who set the trap--name is Gross--is captured, apologizes, and warns them to be careful because Marr and Chris have put out the word: Frank and Joe decide to play along After a few uneventful nights, the Hardy's decide to call it an evening when this one gigantic dude, Anchor Pete, comes after them--carrying said anchor!

Just as he is about to bash their heads in, the Town Hall's clock once again strikes midnight, youthful war cries are released, and all hell breaks loose Anchor Pete is subdued by the five sleuths Hardy shows up, too He has a lead on Marr Quickly, all of our heroes journey to his hideout and capture him--and Chris Finally, we even find out, kinda sorta, what was so special about Malcom Wright's radio What I Liked Everything.

This story is a bunch of mini-adventures rolled up into one all-encompassing story. All of them are a lot of fun to read through, and while artistic license is taken--as it always is--the story itself mini-stories, too is fantastic. I also want to reiterate that the author creates an excellent feeling of dread when Joe is kidnapped. Frank and Chet's anxiety is well-done and very believable.

Frank is not going to be okay until he finds Joe. This "shines" for lack of a better term through clearly. And, out on Barmet Bay, in the fog, the eeriness--and danger--our heroes find themselves in is also done very well. The oncoming schooner keeps sounding its horn Only when the ship is about to bear down upon the youths are they able to get out of its way What I Did Not Like Honestly, other than the silly hand signals that Frank and Joe use at the story's beginning--which we will never see again--not a thing.

So, in conclusion, I am rating this one with five very strong stars. It is one of Frank and Joe's best stories, and definitely on my short list of personal favorites. Depending on my mood, some days it may be my favorite. Thank you, as always, for reading. The revised, updated edition reviewed here was published in , and written by James Buechler. Buechler wrote another Hardy Boys novel that is also on my short list of favorites: Dec 15, Jackson rated it it was amazing.

Feb 04, Laura rated it it was ok Shelves: I've found that I can reread Nancy Drew as an adult and still enjoy them, but I can't find the same appeal in the Hardy Boys stories. I can see why kids would like it, but I'm obviously not the right audience. To its credit it is more action-packed then any ND story I can recall. However, Frank and Joe are not as clever and charming as Nancy. Dec 15, Elizabeth Castro rated it liked it. Joe gets kidnapped early on in the story.

After many false starts, Frank picks up the kidnapper's trail and a pursuit ensues. Of course, Joe is recovered and more friends join them in New York. The boys quickly run out of money and don't want to burden their parents. The mother in me flinched quite a bit during this book.

Frank and Joe took a job that lasted only a few hours and hitched a ride from strangers who turned out to be FBI agents following the same bad guys. A little too convenient for my taste. And then the wanted criminals who had left Bayport for New York, decided to come back to Bayport and visit the scene of the crime, which is when Frank and Joe called the same FBI agents they had hitchhiked with. Again, a little too convenient for me. But the ending wrapped up nicely, and was exciting.

After reading this book, I wondered why I hadn't gotten more into the Hardy Boys series as a child. And I cringe at how Chet is written and the author's view of someone overweight. When Joe is kidnapped, this incident starts Frank of on a chase that could end disastrously for him and his pals. Read more Read less. Prime Book Box for Kids. Read reviews that mention hardy boys happened at midnight frank and joe well written gets kidnapped new york trying to get joe gets boys series awesome book great book book frank joe hardy boys books boys book thieves gang smugglers action bayport. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. My older brother had a collection of the Hardy Boys, which I read because I read everything I could get my hands on. I particularly remember this story because Joe Hardy gets kidnapped and is missing for much of the first part of the book while Frank and the gang hunt high and low for him and try to figure out why he was grabbed in the first place.

Their acerbic aunt arrives on the scene and is very amusing.

I remembered this part of the book very well, including the beginning where the boys are introduced to the joys of an automat, "The invention of the age! So when I had a young boy staying with me I got this book to share with him to help him with his reading skills. Imagine my surprise when I was reading it that almost none of the foregoing occurs. I thought I was losing my memory--or was it the first stage of Alzheimers? At any rate, I did some reasearch and discovered that The Hardy Boys were part of a syndicate one of the all-time most popular in juvenile literature and were ghost written by a series of writers who all wrote under the pen name that's on all the books: While hitchhiking back from New York, the boys meet two Department of Justice men who are investigating a case of diamond smuggling.

When they return to Bayport the Hardy brothers locate who they believe to be Taffy Marr, the diamond smuggler. The Hardy boys chase him to the airport and then hire a plane to continue the chase, however the plane they hired has mechanical problems and crashes. After again returning to Bayport they locate Taffy Marr again, and send a message for the Department of Justice men to come and help them make the arrest. Together with help from the Department of Justice men, the Hardy brothers manage to arrest Taffy Marr and the men he's been working with.

The story concludes with an informal party at the Morton's farm again, with the boys recounting their adventures for their friends, while the clock strikes midnight again.
