Would you like us to take another look at this review? No, cancel Yes, report it Thanks! I loved his accents and how he makes these very strange characters stand out. I like his intonation for Skulduggery, rather sarcastic and one of those people who really don't panic. If he does, then you're in trouble. She talks to him kind of disrespectfully, but it doesn't bother him.

Skulduggery Pleasant: Playing With Fire

He treats her as an equal. There were loose ends tied up from the first book that really needed tying.

Let's Read: Skulduggery Pleasant: Playing With Fire - Chapter 6

Even a cameo of sorts from Valkyrie's deceased uncle who left her his house and fortune. The sorcerer world grows bigger and more complicated in this book, and Valkyrie has cause to think about the life she's chosen as the descendant of Ancients who has decided to fight the good fight. She realizes how much time she's missing out with her family. This book is just plain weird.

If you don't like weird, pass it by. If you have strong opinions on what young people should read and that list includes violent books with sorcery, monsters and psychopathic characters who have no qualms about harming a year-old girl, then you won't care for this. But if you like fun, weirdly humorous, quirky, sometimes scary, and sometimes creepy crawly books with not a small degree of wish fulfillment for tweens and messages about empowerment for young girls , then you might like this. Mar 29, ambsreads rated it really liked it Shelves: What else can I say? It was enjoyable, it was fast, it was hilarious.

It's basically everything I want in a story with no unnecessary romance. I'll still write a full review for book one, but I doubt I will for every book in this series. Every time I read these books I get this warm and fuzzy feeling, suddenly my crops are flourishing, my skin is clear, my depression and anxiety are cured ah how I love Skulduggery Pleasant.

I'm definitely glad I decided to continue on with this series. Even though it's been a while since I finished the first installment, it was still quite easily recall what happened way back then. There are so many things to like about this series - I particularly love the sense of humor and the dialogue between Valkyrie and Skulduggery.

Landy also does a fantastic job writing action and developing the magic system of the world. If you liked the series opener, you'll need to continue on here becau I'm definitely glad I decided to continue on with this series. If you liked the series opener, you'll need to continue on here because this one is definitely better. An evil force is still trying to release Faceless Ones, and our heroes, Skulduggery and Valkyrie, have to stop it.

Just like with the first novel, I got just what I expected: Not quite good as the first one, but still a fun read. Can't wait to continue on with the series. I'm so glad I decided to reread this in English this time and I can't wait until I can get my hands on Midnight. This book is extremely funny with a great sense of humor Skulduggery and Valkyrie bickering is the best! This series belongs to favorites and this reread has proven to me once again that Derek Landy deserves his place amongst my favorite authors. Ich mag es so, so gerne! Schade, dass ich die Reihe nicht schon als Jugendliche direkt angefangen habe, ich finde, das merke ich ein wenig, trotzdem: Apr 26, Sam rated it really liked it.

The first book was funny, magical and full of adventure, and this one also delivers all of those things. I love the soundtrack and special effect sounds on the audio book, it really sets the scene and makes the story more exciting! Keep up the good work of saving the world!! Review is also on my blog http: Jul 23, Abby rated it liked it. If books were food, Skulduggery Pleasant would be a chocolate-covered gummy bear.

Allow me to elaborate. At first, the idea of a chocolate-covered gummy bear sounds weird and a little gross. But in reality, although it is weird, it is completely delicious. In the same way, the idea of Skulduggery Pleasant is weird and unappealing: But once you taste it, you discover how delightfully fun it is. Don't get me wrong, it isn't very good for you. In fact, consume If books were food, Skulduggery Pleasant would be a chocolate-covered gummy bear.

In fact, consume too much of it at once, and you'll probably get sick.

After all, the prose is not art, the plot is not very well organized, and the story is not memorable. But that doesn't really matter, because sometimes it's great to chow down on junk food. Chocolate-covered gummy bears are not for everyone, of course, but I find them addictively delicious! My only real complaint is that it has a few too many murders and cuss words for a kid's book.

Dec 18, Samantha wickedshizuku Tolleson rated it really liked it Recommends it for: I'm excited to be able to read this series! The first book was excellent and I have Brooks from One Piece pop into my head. I find it so humorous, because to me I can positively say that this wouldn't seem strange to me For some reason it seems that the villains are funnier than the protagonists. You're definitely in for a good laugh while reading this installment.

I recommend for angsty early teens. That's all for now. View all 3 comments. Apr 25, Katie. I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one. It still had an amazing plot and sub plots, which I'm excited to discover more about in the next Book; the sarcasm was still on point and I love the dialogue - but it didn't have something that the first had and I just can't place my finger on it. Never mind, on to the next one! Wow - What Fun! Moving forward in her apprenticeship to Skulduggery, Valkrie Cain aka Stephanie Edgley has made great strides, but has a great deal left to learn.

Skulduggery's old nemesis, Baron Vengeous and his band of legendary monsters, known as the Grotesguery are determined to release the Faceless Ones and destroy the world. Of course, the oh' so cool, ultra chic, quick witted wizard stands in their way. The story takes off when the Baron escapes from what was reportedly an inescapable pr Wow - What Fun!

The story takes off when the Baron escapes from what was reportedly an inescapable prison and sets his devious plan into motion. To revive the ancient creatures known as the Faceless Ones he would first have to revive the Grotesquery, a hideous creature with the power to split the framework of space and time. However the entire plan rests with Baron's ability to obtain the most vital ingredient Throughout this wonderfully frightening imaginary journey, our heroes must find a way to stop Baron Vengeous' army of monsters from coming fully back to life. Should Valkyrie and Skulduggery fail, the Faceless Ones will return, and the world as they know it will be no more.

Will the evil band of hideous baddies defeat the dapper dead wizard and his young apprentice? An intense, exciting adventure that will have even the most reluctant reader on the edge of their seat. While some of the more frightening characters and scenes may be a bit too much for very young readers, their older counterparts will devour the pages.

Skulduggery is an ingenious, likable character Allowing the hero to display a fear, albeit an understandable one, that of torture, allows kids to see that even the people they look up to have faults and fears and in today's society this is an important message that flows over into every aspect of life.

May 15, Valnik rated it it was amazing.

Well once again I have completed another book! We'll see how long that takes me or if I get sucked into reading this whole series before being able to move on. Skulduggery turns the lifeless Grotesquery over to the Sanctuary's top scientist, Kenspeckle Grouse , to take apart the hybrid. However the Grotesquery has already absorbed a lot of power from Vile's armour and Valkyrie's blood and wakes up in the middle of the night whilst being operated on. He kills the scientist's assistants and three Cleavers , then goes after Valkyrie.

Skulduggery and Tanith arrive and the three of them attack the Grotesquery before escaping. Meanwhile members of Sanctuary's all across the world are being murdered by assassins to distract people from Vengeous's plan. Billy-Ray Sanguine has also released Springheeled Jack from prison and sends him after a Sanctuary official in London. After discovering that he is being manipulated by Vengous in a plan to bring back the Faceless Ones, Jack kills his victim.

Skulduggery works out that Vengeous is actually a pawn in someone else's plan and accuses Thurid Guild of being in league with this mystery benefactor.

  • In a rage, Guild fires Skulduggery who decides to go after Vengeous anyway. Valkyrie begrudgingly goes to her family reunion as a distraction to Dusk. The Torment meanwhile has discovered that Valkyrie is alive and goes after her only to be confronted by Skulduggery and Tanith Low. The Torment transforms into a giant spider but Skulduggery and Tanith defeat him nevertheless. Valkyrie is subsequently attacked by vampires and forced to flee. Dusk corners her and vows that when he has transformed her into a vampire he's going to set her loose on her parents while in her bloodlust.

Valkyrie stabs Dusk in the leg with the syringe he uses to curb his vampiric side whilst he is transforming and as a result he is caught between vampire and human and put in intense pain. Springheeled Jack comes and rescues her and defeats Dusk so as to frustrate Vengeous's plans because he doesn't want the Faceless Ones to return and because Sanguine, who works with Vengeous, has betrayed him. Meanwhile China is attacked by Vengeous in an underground car park. The dark sorcerer, with Lord Vile's Armour, brutally murders China's bodyguards Sev and Zephyr , then viciously beats her unconscious before taking her to Clearwater Hospital which is serving as his headquarters.

Accompanied by Tanith Low, Mr. Bliss and some Cleavers , Skulduggery and Valkyrie go to Clearwater Hospital and battle with the Grotesquery which due to being part Faceless One is virtually invincible. Mr Bliss is incapacitated but the Cleavers mercilessly attack the Grotesquery and almost overpower it when Vengous arrives along with China whom he has taken captive and together with the Grotesquery he kills the Cleavers and puts some other Cleavers and Tanith Low into unconsciousness using a Necromancy wave. He then beats Skulduggery and Valkyrie into submission. Valkyrie tricks Vengous into releasing her, saying that she will join him but she releases China who attacks Vengous and the Grotesquery, giving Valkyrie time to free Skulduggery who joins in the assault against Vengous, tearing off his helmet and his breastplate before shooting him in the stomach.

In a swoon, Vengous crawls toward the Grotesquery but his god callously breaks the Baron's neck.
