After following Karik through his teenage turmoil, it was so rewarding to watch him come into his own in this book as a man, scientist, and lover.

Romi is possibly my favorite character in all of these books. The banter and chemistry between these two is simply amazing. The best love is born out of respect, not infatuation, and respect is definitely the basis for this couple. The only downside to this book is that Arman and Kei take a secondary role. They're not in a large portion of the book, and I missed them. The emerging bond between Karik and Romi, though, I think makes up for their absence.
I've always enjoyed "road shows" in fantasy fiction, and Staying Power is a near perfect execution.
The new country explored in this book, Andon, is so vibrant and real on the page that I found myself wishing I could go there for real. One person found this helpful. Good plot, well developed and likable characters. Good, but undemanding read. So why only 3. Somehow,despite the length of the book, there is a feeling of two-dimensionality and non-ending. Also, much of the book is spend on describing the expedition on which main characters are on. Since this is a fantasy novel, it is not so very interesting. Bad guys do not even get caught.

So, something of a cliff-hanger. And besides some of the books from the same author are SO much better. Really falling in love with everyone.
