This is a fine collection of short fiction from Bruce McAllister, whose first story sold while he was in high school. It's in the collection, and it's still a good story. The tales are memorable, inventive, entertaining, and often more serious than much of science-fiction is given credit for. Instead of resorting to blooping robots and comedic aliens, McAllister adheres more to the fundamental principle that the story comes first, and the sci-fi premise is secondary. It's refreshing, even in This is a fine collection of short fiction from Bruce McAllister, whose first story sold while he was in high school.

It's refreshing, even in stories from decades past, and makes this collection read as well today as ever The result is a book I am happy to have on my shelf and stories I will read happily several times over. A lot of grim, dark stories, often melancholy; several of them have military settings much like Lucius Shepherd. I remember them, even if I don't remember what I thought of them, so that's saying something.
Dream Baby is an excellent novella, which apparently became a best selling novel; it could be made into a great movie. Overall a good comp, but not something I would rave about. Jan 26, K.

I loved the stories in this book Reading the explanation about how Bruce got the idea and where the story went from there was really fun. Sep 03, Sheri is currently reading it Shelves: did-not-finish. Was curious to read this after hearing "Kin" on Selected Shorts. Will probably not finish at this time. May pick up again in the future.
