To celebrate, we are reviving our Ampersand Record Club series, wherein musicians meticulously discuss their latest release, track-by-track. With that said, we listened almost entirely to Motown while writing this album. Amanda came up with the giant synth lead on her Prophet Brennan ended up using a 12 string electric guitar and I cut up radio transmissions and loaded them onto a SP sampler. Actually, one year for Christmas he got me an unused ticket from Woodstock.
Youth flocked to be a part of something, to share in a sense of belonging. They burst into it spontaneously one day in the rehearsal space and both Carl and Brennan instantly came up with their own guitar lead and vocal melody. It turned out to be Thievin huddled over floor toms with an old guitar tuner trying to down-tune the drums to specific notes for some overdubs. Jace commented that he could probably just correct the pitch using AutoTune but that he had never actually used it and would have to try to find it on the Internet.
Later that same day, an Onmichord came in the mail that Jace had bought off of eBay.

Brennan sat down with it for a few minutes and it ended up being the only instrument in the third verse. Oh, and in the end Thievin had those drums tuned perfectly. You have to accept the inevitable if a runner steals your heart. The instrumentation on this one is relatively minimal and spacious, leaving room for all of the vocals. There are some interesting sounds that found their way into the mix though.
When we wrote our last record I had just come through a mental breakdown and a bout with panic attacks and as a result there are these weird dark undertones and this hang up with winter on that album that I wanted to shed this time.

Admittedly, and deservedly, the sax has gotten a pretty bad rap in rock music over the years. In the spirit of all those unexpected and blaring solos in old doo wop we left some space in this one for Paul to take a full on saxophone solo.

Forever reason I felt compelled to write it entirely in similes. On tour last summer a few of us went to see the Davis exhibit in Montreal and I was so taken by a photograph of Greco that I immediately went home and read everything I could find about her. Brennan sings this one.

Lyrically this one was a lot of fun to put together. Under most circumstances the basic melody and song structure exist before the words do and I end up locking myself away in a dark room and counting out syllables on my fingers to try and make my ideas fit, but Greco was a wide open palette and we arranged the song to the words.

I was trying to remain conscious of this because I knew I wanted this, and all of the songs for that matter, to capture identifiable and relatable experiences — rather than look inward in a personal and isolated manner. Once again my infatuation with pop culture got the best of me and the solution proved to be placing John Lomax and Jacques Cousteau in a bar together.
