But it may equally well be said that all three members of the soul are part and parcel of the astral body. The Spiritual Soul, for example, can only come into being as an astral entity in an appropriate physical body. Here he declares that dreams have no validity in modern occultism. On other occasions, he said something quite different. Dreaming is thus a relic of the normal state of consciousness of former times.
And yet the dream-condition of today differs essentially from the old picture-consciousness The same applied to what is often spoken of as visions, premonitions and second sight. This is the fundamental claim he makes for "occult science" as described and developed by himself: It is true, it is "scientific" and objective, while competing spiritual systems are false, unscientific, and delusional except for systems that are essentially consistent with, and secondary to, his system.

All "true" spiritual systems, he taught, fundamentally agree with one another; they have evolved from one another; and they are currently epitomized by Anthroposophy. Their pictures begin to succeed each other in sensible connection, like the thoughts and ideas of daily life. He can discern in them law, cause, and effect. The content, too, of his dreams is changed.
While hitherto he discerned only reminiscences of daily life and transformed impressions of his surroundings or of his physical condition, there now appear before him pictures of a world he has hitherto not known. The Way to Supersensible Cognition. But he said a second path also exists. If, for example, the soul is deliberately steeped for weeks and months or even longer in feelings of humility, the feeling-content is transformed into spiritual perception. A gradual ascent through this and other feelings of this kind can thus become a pathway into the supersensible.
The emotional approach would seem to be less elevated. Yet Steiner often taught that emotions are truer than ideas or thinking or rationality science ; the heart is truer than the head. Thinking enables us to grasp the physical level of existence, he said, but feelings enable us to apprehend spiritual realities. Feeling really has a connection with all the spiritual beings who must be considered real Out of these feelings and the thoughts that are bound up with them, the organs of clairvoyance are formed. Note that feelings are more fundamental than thoughts: the latter arise from the former; and together, feelings and thoughts lead to the development of incorporeal "organs" that facilitate a still higher form of apprehension, namely clairvoyance.
The Observation of Particular Events and Beings. Steiner claimed that occult initiates can learn not only the general laws and conditions of the spirit realm, but also the particular conditions and actions of specific spirit beings. Careful study is required, however. Aspirants should heed him well, he admonished. Those who would claim to recognize the spiritual details, without have undergone a proper training are liable to countless illusions Yet the reliable observation of the particular is only possible against the background of a more universal knowledge When he has walked along these paths in the sincere and unselfish quest of knowledge, then and then only is a man fit to observe the details Unalloyed insight into the single facts and beings is only possible for those whose sincere interest in the universal truths of spiritual science enables them to receive the detailed revelations too in a scientific spirit and without selfish longing.
In the past, spiritual aspirants needed gurus whom they obeyed unquestioningly, Steiner said. On the modern Anthroposophical path, by contrast, a guru is more like a friendly advisor, not a stern master. Nonetheless, having a guru is necessary; otherwise, the spiritual seeker would be overwhelmed by the mysterious, seemingly inexplicable events and beings he would perceive in the spirit realm. Steiner offered himself as the guru for modern humanity, and his followers accept him in this role. We should note that Steiner sometimes said that the correct spiritual path today is provided by Rosicrucianism.
But once again, Steiner was propounding a distinction without a real difference. The "Rosicrucianism" he advocated is all but indistinguishable from Anthroposophy — it is Rosicrucianism as reinterpreted by himself, the founder of Anthroposophy. In similar fashion, Steiner provided the central doctrines affirmed in a new "Christian" sect, the "Christian Community". Waldorf education is another such face; it, too, is an embodiment of Anthroposophical doctrines and practices.
They may have heard that Steiner was a philosopher, an educational reformer, a polymath — indeed, a genius. Any schools founded on his teachings must be swell. They believe that the universe is as Steiner described it, and this is the vision of the universe they would like Waldorf students to accept, sooner or later. Waldorf faculties may not overtly teach Anthroposophical doctrines to their students — but they lace much of their work with allusions and nods to Anthroposophy. They think that Steiner told them the truth about the universe, and of course they want their students to find their way to the truth.
Anyone who is an Anthroposophist does accept most, if not all, of them. What you have been reading in "Everything" is what Anthroposophists believe. Consider the implications. And think about this. Do you want your children to be "educated" by people who believe Steiner?
Not every Waldorf teacher is a devout Anthroposophist, but — as we have just now seen — Steiner said they all should be. Do you want your child to be shepherded in the direction of Anthroposophy? A child sent to a Waldorf school is likely to be led in precisely that direction. Here are a few:.
