Please try again later. So glad I got this book! I've been a Sal Mineo fan for many years. I was always interested in knowing more information on his life and career, but there was always little out there. Michaud has done a very diligent and admirable job on his research for this book.

I was riveted cover to cover. I found things I had never known and information on things I always thought were speculative at best. Mineo was such a marvelous talent and so sadly taken too soon. His career started out so promising, but fell victim to people that mismanaged it terribly not to mention the ones that practically were living off his hard earned money. He just never really had anyone to take him under wing and help him sort out his difficult adjustment to life and transition to adult roles, plus help him to take successful control of his personal life and his finances.

I felt he was conflicted in many ways not only about the direction of his career but his sexuality and his basic life survival. Mineo will come off to the reader as almost predatory in the way he chose his sexual partners. Likewise, Mineo never cooked for himself. In later years, his former housekeeper took care of him pro bono.

Mineo also pitched scripts he surely must have known were too trashy for financial backers. Readers may not feel they know Mineo any better for all his struggling for serious roles and juggling male and female bedmates.

Like Freddie Mercury or Jack Kerouac, the restless Mineo longed to do his craft and find an elusive free love. Michaud reveals much of Mineo but perhaps not enough. An unanswered riddle remains at the heart of this biography, perhaps because he stuck too closely to facts and resisted their analysis. Was Mineo simply a victim of child stardom, a bed-hopping Peter Pan, or could he have pulled up his boot straps and gotten on with things, in his own bi way?
