What I think is that this song is about a young woman who used to be nice and "pure", let's say, a virgin who barely even thought about sex until a guy comes by and has sex with her and that completely changes her. But the thing here is that she's probably been taught from a young age that sex is bad and has not been told that she could feel lust she's probably from a religious family?

I don't know and she starts feeling dirty and confused. When she understands she's feeling lust, she starts grows anger for the young man that "ruined" her pure life, goes crazy and either drowns herself in the river or kills the guy and throws his body to the river. But I am not alive" this whole fragment is about her realising that she's feeling lust and expressing her hatred for how easily she feels it now that she's been initiated sexually.

This makes her terribly depressed, she doesn't feel alive anymore. She feels she's not worth anything now that she's sinned. Being down on your knees is a symbol of repenting your sins, so basically she's saying that this is her way of showing God that she's repented. So finally, I think this song is about how catholic religion and it's ideas about sex can fuck a person up terribly, to the point of making a person feel like they're worthless monsters for doing and feeling natural things. There was an error. Flag fabkilljoy on March 07, Flag Azarathian on May 21, When she was young, she took what she could get Bicycles, water jets in sprinkler form.

Sep 05, Chelsea Humphrey rated it really liked it Recommended to Chelsea by: I'm fully confident this will be one of the most talked about book of the Spring season, and why shouldn't it be?

It was a deliciously compulsive read, has an attention grabbing cover, and even the title hints at dragging us down the rabbit hole of deceit and despair alongside the characters. It's almost as if it taunts the reader to come along for the ride, if you dare. Anyone who knows me well knows that I love dark and twisty psychological thrillers, yet it's been really hard to find one I'm fully confident this will be one of the most talked about book of the Spring season, and why shouldn't it be?

Anyone who knows me well knows that I love dark and twisty psychological thrillers, yet it's been really hard to find ones that tickle my fancy since the Gone Girl frenzy of the 's. RIP unique and original books. While I cringe at even making this comparison, I must admit this book is the first in awhile to give me the same feeling I received when stumbling upon Gone Girl many years ago.

The plot is entirely different; it had that dark feeling of spiraling down a funnel where you start out slow and steady on the wide brim and gain momentum as you draw closer to the grand finale. I love stories that are structured this way and think they are a staple in suspense fiction; while it seems mostly police procedurals are tailored this way, I found it refreshing to happen across the formatting in Follow Me Down without all the cumbersome details from the law enforcement side of things.

The characters are unlikeable and there are copious amounts of drinking alongside the recreational use of prescription drugs. Without getting spoilery, there are dark subjects riddled throughout this book from just about every angle imaginable. My point is, many times I just can't connect with a book that has so many unlikable and heavy aspects; most books that sound similar from the points mentioned above I have ended up not finishing due to the distracting nature of being bombarded with so many unpleasant details.

Not so with this book! Even though she was flawed and highly irritating at times, I found myself cheering Mia on in the search for answers regarding her brother and poor Joanna. Smith infused just enough snarky attitude and dark humor into the narrative to lighten the mood where I could fully relax into this mid-western world that almost featured a noir-like atmosphere. I think Mia was purposefully written this way to give her flesh and bones, allowing her to come alive and walk alongside us instead of just sitting as another two-dimensional wilting flower we want to throw a book at.

Maybe also a shoe. I know she was rotten and all kinds of screwed up and clearly a full on narcissist as gleaned from above , but there's something refreshing about a character who takes her issues and plays them up for the sheer drama of it all. While there is the overall big mystery surrounding the disappearance of Lucas, there were tiny nugget mysteries as well surrounding Mia's mother, Mimi, and the question of who the twin's father really is.

I've always enjoyed novels that contain a family tree of secrets, so when this one revealed itself as such, in part, I became elated at the possibilities of the who's, the why's, and how it would pertain to the bigger picture. I really enjoyed how everything wrapped up in the end; the major questions were answered, but things were left a little messy in places and everything wasn't magically fixed to perfection.

Again, I truly believe we'll be hearing lots of buzz surrounding this debut throughout What more do you need besides an endorsement from both Chevy Stevens and Diane Chamberlain on the front cover? I'd highly recommend this to fans of the psychological thriller; this truly had the feel of a classic whodunnit while adding in fresh, modern, and unique traits to separate it from the traditional suspense novels that are being touted left and right. I want to emphasize that while there are twists and turns, the brilliance of this novel isn't based on a single plot element; this was a well rounded read that is fully capable of standing on it's own without being compared to other books or marketed as the next fill in the blank.

The cover only begins to touch at how haunting and disturbing of a read this was; you'll want to go ahead and snag your copy to discuss with your friends so you aren't the last one in on what a highly delectable book this was. I loved this book! Mia Haas, the protagonist worked as a pharmacist in Chicago, while her twin brother, Lucas was a local teacher in a small town Wayoata, North Dakota.

The victim, Joanna was a student of Mr. Haas and only sixteen years old. Whoever did this is still out there and needs to be brought to justice. She is one gutsy lady! I will not give away any more of the plot, for risk of spoilers. I can just recommend highly this mystery thriller. Any fan of mystery or whodunits will love this book. One of the best thrillers I have read in ! View all 98 comments. Sure, Mia's thoughts flip-flopped as she spent much of her time constantly ruling her twin brother in and out of tragic scenarios.

Between her chemical dependency issues and unfocused thoughts, she was at times annoying, even silly, and had a questionable spree of TSTL moments. But I liked her 4. But I liked her all the more for her weaknesses because she kept me laughing. This book was so much fun to read and I never anticipated that a pill-popping and pill-pushing narrator would be so entertaining! And it only took 16 days for Mia to raise hell in her old community The ending wrapped up a bit too neatly and I wasn't a huge fan of that conclusion.

Such a great combination of red herrings, twists and turns, and flawed characters, all woven together to make this one heck of a mystery to try to figure out.

The cover art is what first drew me to this book, throw along an enticing synopsis and I was in! Again we have the running thriller theme of small town girl who gets murdered, but the author did a great job going above and beyond the usual stereotypes that this theme so often presents. All This is what a psychological thriller is all about! All the loose ends were tied up neatly at the end, I felt as if everything came together and I had no unanswered questions. The novel is about a High school teacher named Lucas who is accused of rape and murdering one of his students in a small town in North Dakota. His case is not helped by the fact that he is now missing disappearing on the same day the body of one of his students is pulled from the river. Lucas and Mia were raised by an alcoholic mother who now resides in a care home due to a brain injury. This is a very readable thriller and with the strong characters and the well paced plot it will certainly be a success.

Even my best book detective skills didn't have me uncovering the twists and reveals before their time. This one kept me captivated. Mia heads back to the small "hick" town she was brought up in from her life in Chicago because her twin brother Lucas has been accused of murder. Nobody can find Lucas and Mia just can't accept that he's murdered a young woman in cold blood.

The town on the other hand are ready to lynch him. W Don't you love a book that really keeps you guessing? With each character that gets introduced more questions get raised and before long you are looking at everyone closely and trying to figure out how they fit into the picture. Author Sherri Smith does a fabulous job of giving us some fascinating characters, more than one with distinct personality disorder traits that give us a sense of unease in their company.

Mia is quickly turned on by the town that is hunting for her brother. I liked Mia a lot. She's incredibly imperfect, has a load of issues but is gutsy and determined. If the police are not going to listen to her theories then stuff them - she will find answers herself. It's heartbreaking at times watching her uncover secrets, stories and clues.

Surely Lucas didn't kill this young woman. The characters combined with the plot and it's hidden twists and turns make for hugely addictive reading. I picked this novel up every spare chance I got and fell asleep a few times with my glasses on, Kindle in hand as I tried to stay awake to milk a bit more from the book. I formed opinions many times to change them a few chapters on and by the time I'd decided how it would finish I got to the end of the book to be proven terribly wrong.

I love it when a book beats me. It's one of those. There is some solid back story interwoven into current day events. Characters have depth and realism, the plot is paced solid from page one and the writing is excellent. Throw in great twists and one heck of a final reveal and you have a book you are going to want to read and tell others about. So here I am, telling you about it. I'm giving this book 4 stars and highly recommend. The dark psychological undertones and damaged characters give this an edge over other "is he guilty or not" stories.

I was right there, in the town, in Mia's head and as determined as she was to find the truth which was NOT what I expected. Pop this one on your to-read list, Super fiction! Follow Me Down (The Pretty Reckless song)

So when her family put her in Crofton College, a boarding school in the middle of nowhere, you can guess her reaction. So when she meets Scarlett, she begins to think things are looking up. But Scarlett is secretive, wants to be center of attention, runs away without warning. Their friendship becomes destructive. And then something comes between them, tearing them apart. Told in two timelines - Before and After - we see Adamma become friends with Scarlett and their friendship grown then destroy itself and then we see Adamma after something unspeakable happens.

So, you're probably wondering: Or is it, as Tanya feared when she was writing this, a one hit wonder? Why did you worry? This book is just as dark, twisty and as addictive as Heart-Shaped Bruise. And, at the same time, it is very different from Heart-Shaped Bruise. Adamma is so different to Emily Knoll, as is Scarlett. The two mysteries - what happened to Scarlett and who is Adamma romantically involved with - will have you turning the pages and will have you guessing to the last page.

I loved how this thriller kept me on the edge of my seat, staying up late at night and guessing till I closed the book. Thinking that it's the end of her social life, she is surprised when she meets the gorgeous, vivacious it-girl Scarlett Chiltern on her first day.

Scarlett is rich, infamous and they instantly become inseparably. But Adamma also meets Dominic Sim, devilishly handsome, witty and in love with Scarlett. When Scarlett and Adamma fall for the same guy, their friendship is lost in a battle for his affection. Adamma gets the guy, but loses her best friend and then, when Scarlett suddenly goes missing I thought that this book was brilliantly handled and I throughly enjoyed it.

The plot sucked me in and the chapters that jumped backward and forward in time kept me guessing. I loved the setting and I felt that it was described with tremendous detail without becoming taxing or difficult for the reader. The characters of Adamma and Scarlett were carefully and believably portrayed and the difficult topics were handled delicately.

I passed this on to a friend straight after finishing it. May 15, Andrea rated it really liked it. It's Looking for Alaska, as a story of rumors at boarding school, of a girl who goes missing and people around her who know neither of them know the real her. The plot was intriguing, most of the characters were well thought out although I'm not entirely sure who Molly was and why she was such a significant character to appear so often but do so little and each time I put down the book I looked forward to picking it up again.

I had figured out the secret boyfriend by page which was slightly disappointing as Tanya Byrne's other book, Heart Shaped Bruise, kept me guessing until the end. Whilst the ending fit a I would have to give this book a 3. Whilst the ending fit and the mystery was solved I was left feeling it was lacking something. I hated it but I loved it at the same time. It made me think and question the book and characters a bunch. However, I did find the ending really hard to understand - but maybe that's how the author wanted it to be, like your questioning everything you've just read. But I still had to search up a break down of the ending and it all ended up making 'sense' to thanks to this one blog. It told me that Adamma's boyfrie I have rated this a 3.

This also means that either one of them could of killed Scarlett. I really hated Scarlett. She was annoying and rude and a horrible friend. She lied to Adamma so much, and she kept on making excuses for her! That really annoyed me.

See a Problem?

I wish we got to know Adamma's best friend a little bit more; Jumoke. She kept on getting mentioned in scenes, but we never actually met her. This book touches on subjects like rape and assault which I feel like was written really realistically and was not glorified in anyway. Anyway, this book was something I am really glad that I read and I am going to be thinking about this for the next few weeks for sure.

Jul 13, Mieneke rated it it was amazing Shelves: My top debut last year was Byrne's first novel, Heart-Shaped Bruise. I'd actually planned to read it after the holidays, but Wiebe read it and adored it and kept nagging me to read it so we could discuss the book. And then I got Book Fear Anyone who has ever discovered an author that just completely swept them away and is an automatic read from that point forward, has likely encou My top debut last year was Byrne's first novel, Heart-Shaped Bruise.

Follow Me Down

Anyone who has ever discovered an author that just completely swept them away and is an automatic read from that point forward, has likely encountered this phenomenon. Book fear is what happens when after loving the first book you read by an author, you actually have doubts about reading the second, because what if it isn't as fantastic as the first one? What if they don't live up to the promise that first book made? What if the author is a one-hit-wonder?

Book fear set in hard with Follow Me Down and didn't just strike me, it struck Wiebe as well, and so I hiked up my skirts, took a deep breath and took the plunge. And then I didn't come back up for air until I'd followed the book down all the way to the end. I followed it to the realisation that my fears had been silly and that Byrne truly was the awesome writer Heart-Shaped Bruise promised she was.

Because Follow Me Down? It was just as dark, tricky and compellingly clever as its predecessor. The book is narrated in first person from Adamma's point of view and told in two timelines, the one immediately after Scarlett's disappearance and the other from the moment the two girls meet when Adamma starts attending Crofton High. The plotting of the story is once again super tight and the underlying secrets of both girls are both complex and explosive.

Byrne manages to keep the reader hopping to keep up with all the swerves and twists the story takes. There were several times I was convinced that this time I'd figured it all out, only to start doubting my conclusions three pages later. It's hard to talk about the plot in more depth as that would wreck the reading experience, but Byrne balances all possibilities masterfully. At the heart of the book is the friendship between Scarlett and Adamma. It's the kind of friendship everyone experiences in their adolescence to some degree or another.

It's the unhealthy, obsessive kind of friendship, where you hate the other person as much as you love them and in the end it always ends in tears. While I adored Adamma and her cool, collected demeanour and her outsider's view — owing both to the fact that she's the daughter of a Nigerian diplomat and that she's spent the last few years of her life living in New York — I didn't really like Scarlett. And this isn't just due to how Adamma sees her, though obviously that plays a part, as we only see Scarlett through her eyes, but also due to Scarlett's antics.

On occasion I did see a damaged and needy girl somewhere in there, but most of the time she came across as self-indulgent and self-centred. In addition to these two girls there are a few important secondary characters, Orla, Dominic, Bones, and Mr Lucas, who all are fascinating in their own right.

I loved Orla and her quiet strength. Adamma's desire to help her is completely natural, Byrne shows not just Orla's trauma and difficulties to deal with her being raped, but also Adamma's trying to figure out how to best help and support Orla on this journey and messing up badly a few times. This both provides teens that are faced with similar situations in their own life mirrors to their own experience, but also ensures that the reader doesn't see Adamma as a flawless protagonist.

  • Sinful Surrender (The Elusive Lords Book 1).
  • Add your thoughts?
  • Death and Rebirth of Seneca!
  • Follow Me Down!

Adamma is flawed, she messes up and gets herself into situations that had she thought about them more clearly, she'd have known where too complicated for her to handle. The interactions she has with Bones, or to give him his proper name DS Bone, regarding Orla's situation are wonderful and I loved that he takes her seriously. Dominic is both lovely and confusing, the perfect bad boy love interest. Mr Lucas seems to be a great teacher and one who genuinely seems to care for the welfare of his students. Beyond these characters there are all Adamma's class mates, teachers, and of course her parents, Byrne has created a full cast of characters who all play a significant part.

Yet there are a lot of people, including Adamma and Scarlett, who aren't what they seem to be and figuring out people's true stories and intentions is a large part of what makes this book so compelling. Follow Me Down is a fascinating and engrossing page turner of a story. One that gave me all the feels and kept me glued to the page for just one more chapter because I couldn't let go of the story. If you hadn't discovered her with Heart-Shaped Bruise , then don't waste time and read Follow Me Down as soon as you can, it's too good to miss. All that book fear I had before starting the book was completely unnecessary.
