It's the heir to Peanuts in every good way with Petey Otterloop the modern Charlie Brown --sweet, honest, and funny.

I'm disaapointed I never came across this in one of my local papers when I still read a physical paper and that Thompson has had to stop the strip due to health reasons. Still, I'm thankful I can pick up the rest of t I'm so glad I finally found this comic after having it personally recommended by no less than Bill Watterson--in an interview, but I know he was speaking to me. Still, I'm thankful I can pick up the rest of these collections. What about daily comic strips, though?

They were a big part of my childhood and I'm sad my kids won't have the same experience. Even if I did re-subscribe to a paper, what's left of the comics section after budget cuts is laughable fine The same tired strips that were weighing down the medium when I was a child are being recycled to keep their ever dependent syndicates afloat. Fresh voices have no entry point. Yes, there are a lot of great comics on the web, but they're all over the place.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, maybe a little laziness, but the comics pages were a great institution we may have lost. Check out The Comics Curmudgeon http: Dec 04, Christian rated it it was ok. There is a fake foreword in this book by one of the characters in the strip. In it he says he doesn't like Cul de Sac as much as his own comic books.

I picked this up on a whim and I found it refreshing and clever. In the likes of Foxtrot and Calvin and Hobbes, it traces the events of the lives of a few preschoolers.

I laughed out loud and then shared the book with my eleven year old who ate it up in one sitting. Too cute and quite addicting. I wanted to find more of these, but alas, I don't think there are any. My son got it for Christmas, but of course I stole it and read through it one night. It made me laugh out loud several times - a must read if you have kids this age between Jul 19, John Brassil rated it it was amazing. Each and every one a gem. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. If you ever wondered what happened to the funny pages, they didn't die, they are just being ignored. While the giants we love like Peanuts, Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes are gone and we are often left with multiple imitators, Cul de Sac breaks the mold and offers us a unique style of art that perfectly captures the wonders of being a child without dumbing it down or phoning it it. The main characters are Alice and Petey Otterloop, two kids with completely different taste and outlooks in life.

Petey is a neurotic recluse of an old man trapped in the body of a boy while Alice can only be explained as a whirlwind of sugar, spice and napalm. The adults of the world offer counterpoints to the children that run it and the artist gives us a wonderful style that on first look appears to be scribbles, but they bleed through with more heart and emotion than any other comic on the pages today.

I wish kids knew what newspaper are, they would enjoy this. But you look like a person that reads, so do yourself a favor and get this collection. As a side note, make sure to check which volumes you get, some of them repeat strips. I became an admirer of Cul de Sac and Richard Thompson two years ago. The strip in now in its fourth year. I am constantly amazed by the quality of work that Mr. I just read Shapes and Colors for the second time and I laughed, snorted, cried, and maybe even wet myself a little by the timing of his jokes.

I have been studying a lot of older strips in the last three years and have noticed a few things. It takes at least a year for the creator to find the groove for the strip. They have the groove of the strip but by the second or third year the strip looses steam and it feels like the artist has lost interest. The art seems rushed, sloppy,and the artist no longer explores be best usage of the panels. Cul de Sac is in a class with only a few other strips ever.

Mr Thompson has not only continued to improve on his storytelling but his art is more entertaining than ever. To be honest, he is on the way to being considered one of the greats in comic strips lore. After reading the three volumes you can see why Bill Watterson is one of Richard Thompson's biggest fans Watterson wrote the intro in the first collection. This volume has Petey Otterloop one of the main characters writing the Introduction.

I don't think any cartoonist has one of their characters writing the intro before. Bold move or was everyone else was busy? Its just down right funny! I highly recommend this book.

It is worth the money just for the beautiful cover! I love "Cul de Sac", and when our paper stopped carrying it, I knew I needed to get the collections. One great thing about them in book form is that one can more easily follow the story lines. Plus, I just love the skewed- but still somehow realistic- world depicted. Everyone is more-or-less normal and matter-of-fact, but with various screws loose. While very different in many ways, it does remind me of "Calvin and Hobbes".

One person found this helpful. It's Cul De Sac. Need I say more? Richard Thompson is a comic genius, and Alice is the most awesome 4-year-old comic strip character ever. I can read and re-read Cul De Sac again and again, and it is alwasys fresh, funny, and entertaining. Richard Thompson is a genius at fondly poking fun. I love Alice and Petey and Dill It's driving me crazy, though, that Amazon requires 20 words. Why can't they just accept a five star review?

    • My only regret is that Richard is no longer able to produce these gems For slightly introverted kids and grown-ups, this series is wonderful. My oldest child found it on the bookshelf where I hide good stuff to promote him searching for it and stole it off to his room, where he giggled manically for an hour. Richard Thompson has provided me and my family with a wonderful, laugh-out-loud moment on almost every page.
