This first collection is broken up into three parts. Since all poems in this first section relate to a trip taken or a specific journey, it is safe to call this small body of poetry in section one The Journey Poems. The poems take place in locales such as Egypt, Rome, and Sicily, among others.

Nevermind the foreign scenery or the ocean breeze, Candito is focused on the taste of the sand, the church bells she wants to sleep through and passing out on an ancient floor. The beauty that surely surrounds her is pushed aside and rarely allowed to peep through. It is the beautifully done macabre scenes one remembers of Candito's poetry--not the foreign-sounding locales. One of the many things that astonished me about this collection is how masterfully Candito changes registers in these wonderfully hypnotic poems.

It's Candito's willingness, in this regard, to go deeper and further that kept me reading page after page. Taste of Cherry made me think of George Oppen's idea that "Poets are the legislators of the unacknowledged world. I'm not sure I would particularly call them lyrical not saying they aren't, but they just don't feel like that to me , but Candito is definitely a master of rhythm. Each of the poems has its own flow and the pull of that is compelling.

I also am fascinated by Candito's words. Changing a single word in any of the poems seems like it would destroy the effect utterly. There is a slipperyness in there. I kept I don't have a great deal of experience with poetry in general, but I adored these poems. I kept rolling the words around in my hands while reading. There just seemed to be so much hidden and so much not hidden at the same time. Candito's talent for sliding between prim and vulgar is marvelous as well, perfectly timed. I enjoyed the playfully poetic, at times emotionally disturbing, atmosphere of this book. The poems collected here seem to embody different speakers. At times I felt like I was eavesdropping on a conversation mid story. The setting and context of each poem was not always clear to me. Subtlety is a powerful tool here, forcing the reader to draw connections and imagine the effect of cumulative sensory stimulation.

The beauty, heat, and uncomfortable truth of each moment are fleshed out in a playful way. The casual changing of narrator gender and ambiguity regarding sexual orientation keeps the reader on his or her literary toes. The undeniably erotic undertones to this collection of poetry are not to be outdone by political statements and what struck me as ultimatums: Candito presents a situation that is socially unacceptable, describes it as tenderly as she has the rest, and forces the reader to rethink his or her opinions. Another theme is the power of suffering—from self-imposed pain, to accidents, to pain that teaches and heals.

This expression can be viewed as an outlet of the female struggle between Self and Other, or perhaps the expression of an issue personal to the author that finds its way into several of the poems. Even more intriguing is her ability to pull such a high level of detail from historical accounts, published writing, and Italian opera, leaving the reader wondering how much of her writing stems from personal experience and how much is imagined.
