This modern-day quest for the truth is interspersed with narration from the s, where a beleaguered mother is being subjected to a reign of terror by her young daughter. Beth and her husband have a huge secret. We, the readers, know there is a secret, but not what it is. Because of this, the cops are more concerned about his disappearance than they otherwise might be. When the stories converge at maybe the 75 percent mark, the mysteries are pleasingly resolved.

But then there are a whole bunch more twists and turns in store for you. This is a lot of fun. Thanks to NetGalley and the Penguin Group for the opportunity to review this novel. Every once in a while, a book comes along that completely captivates you—hook, line, and sinker, and I didn't know that it was going to be The Lies We Told. Wow—what a thrill of a ride!

Clara is at her flat in London, waiting for her boyfriend Luke Lawson to arrive from work, but he isn't responding to her text messages. After she notices that Luke's phone was left at home, she checks her computer to see if he's contacted her through email. When Clara checks her inbox, she notices that Luke has indeed emailed her, expecting to be home at a normal time. As Clara's suspicions grow, she contacts Luke's family, friends, and the police. As the investigation develops, evidence starts suggesting that Luke had a stalker, and a darker past than Clara ever realized.

Luke's sister Emily had disappeared when he was a kid, and the family just erased her from their memory. As the investigation gains nationwide appeal, Emily she shows up to assist Clara in her search for Luke, but refuses to sit down with her family. Clara wants to find her boyfriend, but the dark secrets of Luke's family begins to come to the surface.

The Lies We Told is a story that you you must go in blind. I may have even told you too much, but I'm promising you that it's worth it. The mystery behind Luke's disappearance was cleverly written, with minor red herrings along with way, but nevertheless strong and convincing. It's rather difficult to stump me with new thriller-mysteries because the genre is so over-saturated, but The Lies We Told is here to slay! The story juggles two POV's—one coming from Clara's perspective, while another twenty years prior. Both POV's are masterfully written, and convincing. Most of the characters in this story are unlikable, but multifaceted.

I devoured this book in one sitting, but didn't plan to! It should be on your TBR list, and you can thank me later after you fall in love with. Thank you Berkley Publishing for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

All opinions are my own. Katie B Glad you liked it! I really loved this one! Sep 03, Dennis I just finished this. Sep 04, Susanne Strong Nice review Jamie! What a deliciously twisted psychological thriller The Lies We Told turned out to be. I raved about Watching Edie when I read it, but this one is even better. The author draws the reader in with a spine chilling opening and from that moment on I read on in horrified fascination. I was so engrossed in this twisted tale before I knew it I was half way through the book. As girlfriend Clara digs into his past looking for answers, she find things that maybe best staying hidden.

Then you have Beth troubled by the behaviour of her young daughter Hannah, how or what connect the two? As the reader you see the warning signs, hells bells even Beth can see them, as I read these chapters I felt an overwhelming sense of foreboding that made my stomach churn. The thing I loved about The Lies We Told is the way the author seemingly presents the reader with two different stories, each intriguing in their own right, but then when you least expect it Camilla Way brings both stories together in the most shocking way.

A well told tale with twist after twist after twist, Hannah, is a brilliant character. She is a total nutcase, she is scary and completely deranged, but in many ways she made me sympathise with her. This novel is oh so dark, it is a book that grips from the start and, just when I thought I had 'guessed' what the next move would be, it slid expertly into something much more unhinged. Camilla Way has written a book that, for me, will be a recommendation, that I won't have to think twice about.

It is a remarkable look at how decisions can shape a persons life, and how many others are affected by one betrayal. It is dramatic, inventive and what's more, it is a must read for every lover of this genre. Except y I keep saying reading psychological thrillers will make us all lonely paranoid people. The Lies We Told is a breathtaking story about how lies can pollute every part of your life and destroy it. A beautifully written psychological thriller, where I had no idea where it would end up and I read in pretty much one sitting so desperate was I to know what was going on and what the outcome would be for the wonderfully compelling characters.

I was addicted to each. Clara wakes up and finds herself alone. Clara and Jake have been living together for the last six months. All of his belongings are home. The police and Clara both find some interesting and sketchy things about Mr.

The story being told 20 years ago is of Beth, a mother to Hannah and Toby. Beth and her husband had struggled to get pregnant and when they finally have Hannah they are over the moon. Their happiness is short lived however when Hannah starts showing disturbing behavior. How do these two stories unfold and what do they have to do with each other?! I was reading very fast to find out. Family, LIES, betrayal oooo the drama. I enjoyed this gem and recommend.

Having loved Watching Edie, I was thrilled to find out that Camilla Way had a new psychological thriller on the way. Once you have read the prologue, the shocking words contained within those first two pages will have you completely hooked and you will not want to put this book down until you have read the final word. Imagine you wake up one morning and the partner you expect to be lyin Having loved Watching Edie, I was thrilled to find out that Camilla Way had a new psychological thriller on the way. This is what happens to Clara who discovers that her boyfriend Luke is missing.

She is immediately worrried as it is completely out of character for him, especially as he has an important interview that day. I love a book where there are two seemingly unrelated threads running through the narrative and I always relish tying myself in knots trying to work out the connection between them. Her daughter Hannah was one of the creepiest psychopaths that I have encountered recently and the scary thing was how those tendencies were obvious from such an early age. Did Hannah pick up on an underlying feeling in her mother that meant they never bonded or was there something much deeper at work?

Attachment Disorder is another of my interests where I found out recently that the first six months of a babies life are the most important months for their emotional responses to develop so I found it fascinating to watch this mother and daughter relationship as it changes throughout the years but how it was always dependant on how Hannah was feeling.

Camilla Way writes impeccably, bringing together her complex and intriguing characters into a heart thumping climax that delivered on all levels for me. And that last chapter!!!! Just as shocking as the first and left me with goosebumps as I finally closed this brilliant book with the urge to go back to the start and read the whole thing AGAIN!!

It has such a creepy and compelling storyline that it will keep you mesmerised for the entire time you have it in front of you. Highly recommended by me! Aug 18, Sherri Thacker rated it liked it.

After the success of Watching Edie, author Camilla Way is back with another emotionally charged psychological thriller and a compelling dual narrative centred around a seemingly perfect family, a very dark secret hidden in their past and some nightmare consequences.

I confess to maintaining After the success of Watching Edie, author Camilla Way is back with another emotionally charged psychological thriller and a compelling dual narrative centred around a seemingly perfect family, a very dark secret hidden in their past and some nightmare consequences.

I confess to maintaining a healthy degree of scepticism throughout reading given how far-fetched and improbable both strands are and although Camilla Way demonstrates some clever sleight of hand with a few last gasp surprises, the story all felt rather incredible. Admittedly the story is not the most suspenseful but the prospect of seeing both narratives tie up makes it a definite page turner. The novel opens in in Cambridgeshire with an unsettling event and is narrated by recent new mother, Beth Jennings, discovering her beheaded budgerigar and her knowledge that her young daughter, Hannah, is responsible.

As the years pass, Hannah becomes more malicious and manipulative and the Jennings can no longer tell themselves that she will grow out of it with her sociopathic traits making her a pariah in their village. Now with a second child to protect in Toby, Beth and husband Doug are cowed into silence by Hannah and her powerful hold over them prevents the intervention of psychological support.

But just what did Hannah overhear as a seven-year-old child that has given her the upper hand and what does she intend to do with her knowledge? I retain suspicion as to whether any seven-year-old would have the mental capacity to fully understand the significance and potential leverage of her discovery, but regardless of this aspect the feeling of foreboding mounts. The second narrative is set in the present in London and sees blissfully happy twenty-nine-year-old Clara waking up one morning to discover her perfect boyfriend, Luke, has vanished into thin air on the day of an important interview.

After surprising police interest given Luke is not a vulnerable person, the juicy revelations of his unknown stalker and a cache of threatening emails regarding his poor treatment of women ending in a sinister threat ensure there are enough developments for the pace to retain a brisk momentum.

Certain plot threads, including the dodgy upstairs neighbour, are a little overdone and go nowhere substantial. Few will be surprised that Emily lies somewhere deep within the mystery, but how and where is for the reader to discover. A solid and extremely well-written psychological thriller with a double whammy of hidden twists into the close but lacking in genuine tension and founded on a highly improbable series of events. A decent but slightly underwhelming read. Sep 11, Kelley rated it it was amazing Shelves: Novel received courtesy of the publisher Gah!!!!
