This second edition, which combines the features of an atlas and a textbook, presents findings in forensic histology, immunohistochemistry, and cytology based on microscopic investigations using different stainings and different antibodies. Questions of quality when working in the field of forensic histology are included as well as scientific perspectives for further research.

The principal aim is to provide practitioners with detailed information and guidance on how microscopy can help to clarify the cause of sudden and unexpected death. Benign, reactive and infectious conditions will be discussed. Atypical and malignant conditions and their cellular appearance on a variety of cytologic specimens will be explored. Cellular changes induced by therapies and environmental entities will be discussed and their role in rendering a final diagnosis will be recognized.

In the laboratory students will learn in an experiential setting by examining both pre-diagnosed and unknown cases from these sites that demonstrate a wide variety of benign to malignant conditions. Cytopreparatory Techniques I CYT This course will develop the skills necessary to prepare a wide variety of specimens and teaches how to select and apply the appropriate staining technique for each. Cellular Pathophysiology and Histology I BHS This course surveys the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying disease processes and precipitating cellular change and death. Events of cellular energetics, signaling, gene expression and mutations will be highlighted. The morphological, pathological and clinical correlates of these cellular events will be presented after a histological foundation is established.

Basic concepts of cell swelling, inflammation, atrophy, apoptosis, necrosis, dysplasia, anaplasia and neoplasia will be illustrated and identified through microscopy. Once principles are established, a systems approach is taken to demonstrate system-specific pathology. Recent evidence and diagnostic procedures suggest that genetic diseases make up a large proportion of the total disease burden in both pediatric and adult populations. Advances in the development of new and more accurate methods of diagnosing hereditary disease have led to a greater "genetic awareness" and recognition that genetics plays a role in all areas of medicine.

Environmentally-induced mutagenesis and carcinogenesis and the role of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes will be a particular focus of the second half of the course. Experimental Design and Data Analysis PSC This course is required for all Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate students and provides students with a basic knowledge of experimental design and biostatistics.

Cytopreparatory Techniques II CYT This course will develop the skills necessary to prepare a wide variety of specimens and teaches how to select and apply the appropriate staining technique for each.

Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology I CYT This course will present the basic principles of cytopathology applied to the cellular samples obtained through fine needle aspiration FNA from a variety of body sites where lesions can be identified by Radiological techniques.

Atypical and malignant conditions and their cellular appearance will be explored. Cellular Pathophysiology and Histology II BHS This course suveys the biochemical and molecular mechanisms underlying disease processes and precipitating cellular change and death. The use of genomic profiles as biomarkers associated with cancer and cancer risk, autoimmunity and hereditary disorders, as well as determination of histocompatability will be discussed and performed. Biotechnology as a diagnostic and investigative tool will be discussed.

Students will also be exposed to the utility of microarrays and bioinformatics in medicine. Grand Rounds in Pathology BHS Case presentations and discussion in surgical pathology, forensics, and radiation oncology in the medical grand rounds format. While patients cannot directly request a second opinion from the pathology laboratory, they can ask their treating practitioner to arrange one. This may involve collecting another sample, or a second pathology laboratory may be able to process the same sample.
