One person found this helpful. I don't know why, but after reading the foregoing reviews I expected to read an authoritative biography. Surely the reviewers who were so generous with their praise and who wrote such literate mini-essays on punk were, um, encouraged to do so. After the first few pages read like something from People magazine lite, why was I unsurprised to read that Smith " Much of the text comprises series of sentence fragments, and I've encountered not one primary source - all the quotes so far have been culled from old interviews in other magazines or media transcripts.

Is this a cut-and-paste bio? I don't know how I'm going to finish this, or whether I should try. I hate that I helped support such a half-baked effort. Absolutely loved this book! Let me qualify my review with a few details. First of all, I am not really a fan of Patti's music with the exception of the song "Dancing Barefoot" which I wish all her songs sounded like.

Punk it ain't if you think of punk as being the Ramones, Pistols, Damned, etc. I mean, Blondie is closer to punk than Patti. But I AM a fan of Patti as a person. I also must admit that I read her book "Just Kids" and yawned but I'm not a fan of what I call "impressionistic writing. I hesitated at first to buy the book because there were a few neative reviews on Amazon from other readers but seriously what are you talking about???

This book is great and I highly recommend it! It was extremely well written, very detailed and although there are only a few glimpses of how Patti could be competitive with other female rockers The Runaways, Blondie I actually wished there had been more mud slung.

Dancing Barefoot

She goes from homeless hippie chick to NYC underground artiste floating through various art scenes to poetess supreme to rock star and then chucks it all to disappear for 15 years to raise a family - then comes back to rock again! Basically, this is like a lit review for the outline of a first draft of a thesis on Patti Smith's life and career.

If you're a fan of hers, there are undoubtedly other works out there you could read which would be more satisfying. What I liked about this book: I learned some stuff about Patti Smith I didn't know. What I didn't like about this book: I don't think even one period or comma was original material.

The bibliography for this rather short book was HUGE, because the author clearly cannibalized the work of others to compose his "own" book. In the preface, he recalls being a year-old fanzine editor randomly showing up at a Patti Smith Group sound check in London in , and being disappointed that he never got to interview her although he apparently was fortunate enough to interview the rest of her legendary band.

See a Problem?

I get the impression that this book is one part trying to make up for his failed attempt and one part defiant resentment at not being able to interview her in person. It's almost like he's saying, "I don't need to actually interview you in order to write a book about you. However, if he'd wanted to write a GOOD book about her. Nov 18, Ad rated it it was ok. Feb 26, Siobhan rated it it was ok. I found the author referenced other works a lot and there was a lot of name dropping. When I read a bio I like to feel more in touch with their process. Some bios are written so well you can almost be there or imagine what it was like to have been them at that point in their life.

I didn't get this from this book so it was a little stale, so I am carrying on. Sep 18, Carly rated it it was amazing. I was introduced to Patti Smith as an adolescent listening to the Gone Again album.

Frequently bought together

I absolutely fell in love with her, but I never truly understood her I read Just Kids last year and started to see a little of what I had missed. Dave Thompson has done an excellent job of laying out the facts while not excluding the emotion of her career.
