Our brains work at a certain speed, and depending on our past, our beliefs, our emotional states, our health…we will all learn and integrate information at different speeds. The world of technology is like a vast ocean.

You will never get to the end of it, you will never get to a point where you are a master with nothing else to learn. Instead, you need to enjoy the journey of learning for itself. Every little bit of knowledge you gain, or new skill you gain needs to make you excited. Like solving problems, you need to let yourself feel the pride of recognizing that you have taken a step forward, even if it is a small one. Acknowledge Your Progress: There is a lot to learn, and the journey of programming never ends.
But the knowledge is cumulative, so take pride it what you do know, and trust that every effort you take in your learning will create a strong foundation of knowledge for wherever your career takes you. If you are lazy in your thinking and see concentrated, focused thinking as a chore, you will never truly be successful at programming. Programming is a thinking activity.
As humans we are really good at thinking, but the reality is that even though we naturally spend all day doing it, we are lazy in our thinking. These are signs that you have hit a mental limitation and need to find a way through. While programming, you will get tired and thinking literally burns physical energy just like exercising our bodies.
But it is just like going to the gym, the more that you do it, the stronger you will get. As you put pieces together and develop mental concepts, it becomes much easier to discover solutions. If you expect others to think for you, and are unwilling to look at the details of your own situation, you will never be a truly successful programmer. When you are learning something new, it is easy to feel like you lack the knowledge and experience to have your own opinions. There is an inherent fear we all have in being wrong. You need to understand why you think your solution works, and what the benefits are.
You need to developed a nuanced perspective that goes beyond what is obvious. Think for yourself: Through your experience and critical thinking skills, develop your own perspectives. Make reasonable guesses, take a position, and be willing to change as new information comes to light. If you are rigid in your thinking, and you have difficulty keeping your code organized — and by extension your thoughts organized and focused, you will never be successful at programming.
There are two extremes that I sometimes see in students. The first is a rigid and narrow approach to thinking. Things are seen from one perspective only, and suggestions are ignored. A second extreme I see is disorganized thinking. Students seem to make things more complicated than necessary, their code is messy and hard to follow. They overthink problems and write lines of code, when 10 would have been sufficient. What is required is the ability to go back over the solution, reevaluate it, give up on the initial approach, and reorganize.
Not being able to see other possibilities or receive feedback inhibits the ability to grow and improve. Being disorganized slows you down and prevents you from seeing patterns that would otherwise be obvious. And the overall quality of your work is diminished. Self Reflection: You need to take a step back, and look at the bigger picture of how you are approaching things. How can you do this better? Is there anything you can do to make your life easier?
What are you missing that could help you? If you see the end goal of programming as finding the right solution, rather than a spectrum of solutions, you will never truly be successful as a programmer. Computer Science is a science of evaluating tradeoffs. Usually the exam will test you on each of the four practical skills discussed above.
Here are some tips on preparing for each:. Instead, exams are a great way to get valuable, external feedback on any gaps in your knowledge. These are the only three that I recommend to friends taking on a new language. Becoming fluent in three months requires almost total immersion and a generous definition of fluency. There are no shortcuts to language learning, just ways to avoid long detours. Particular emphasis on pronunciation and getting started with using SRSs for language learning.
The fact is that many native English speakers feel they have neither time nor motive to take on a new language. And from a purely utilitarian point of view they have a point.

You can get by almost anywhere in the world with English. Google Translate can fill in most of the gaps. On a scale of one to ten how useful could learning a new language be to us in our lives and careers? How does this compare to binge watching Netflix or spending three hours a day on social media? Nobody else has a right to say what makes us happy and how we should spend out time.
But let me at least try and convince you that learning a language is at least worth some consideration here. A quick Google search will throw up many compelling and well referenced reasons — from health to wealth and wisdom.

For me: languages are a gate keeper to new friends, new authors, new places and new experiences. They transform the way I see, understand, travel and interact with the world.
They improve my ability to focus and help my brain stay fit. These things all make me very happy and are more than worth the effort of an hour a day of patient labour. At the end of the day, nobody can of should tell you how you to spend your time. But please do give languages another chance and you might be surprised where they take you. Instead, learning a language takes a huge amount of hard work and time no matter who you are. There are three main factors that contribute its persistence:. Please trust me on this one, anyone can learn a language.
If you need more proof then consider the fact that almost every single person on the planet has managed to learn at least one. Keep worrying away at it and progress is inevitable. As adults we have fuller brains and much less free time. The fact is though that we also have a lot less to learn and are able to put our limited time to much better use.
