As with any creation, it has an allure that beckons to certain individuals who can feel its prowess and energy. For those few, there is a desire to pull reasoning and purpose from what is hidden, what is lost. It is as a seed planted in the soul which desires the dark to the light, drought to the rain, chill to the warmth in order to grow.

Seeking direction in the darkness is not insanity, but faith. To know such knowledge is the doorway between complexity and simplicity. It is to turn pain into creation, devastation into new ideas. Why do leaves change color? How do birds know when to migrate, deer know when to mate, or spiders know when construct their silky egg sacs? Answers to these questions, like many in nature, are not fully understood by humans. We do know, however, that the mechanisms that trigger seasonal change in the responses of plants and the behavior of animals involve physics, chemistry and biology.

The earth is tilted The axis is an imaginary line running from one pole to the other. As it orbits, our planet presents a different aspect to the sun. In summer, the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun while in winter it is tilted away.

Because we are also spinning on our axis one full turn every 24 hours, this tilting affects day length. The northern hemisphere receives much more total light during a hour period in summer than it does in winter. But why does the light look different? A light to maybe take one step, or perhaps two. Consider if you are in the middle of a power outage and you need to find your way to another room. What do you do? Where do you place the candle in this situation?
