He is convinced of a narrow and distorting perspective of modern technological society and its worldview, viewing a primary obligation and opportunity of art to counteract this modern distortion. He has little patience with and is critical of the cynicism of the postmodernist viewpoint, seeing it, as I understand his argument, as anarchic and destructive. In this sense, his perspective is fundamentally conservative. Roche asserts that meaningful literature and, indeed, beauty contains both truth and sensuousness, manifesting themselves as content and form.
In addition, the parts of the work of art must be necessary and consistent with the whole as well as related to each other, the work thus being organic, carrying the reader forward with both curiosity and pleasure. Art takes us beyond ourselves and therefore is in a sense autonomous, but to be valid it must also relate to values as somehow defined. Literary criticism can concern itself with production aesthetics, artwork aesthetics, and reception aesthetics, all being valid and important, although too often in contemporary criticism the second of these, the most central and important, is neglected in favor of the other two.

Roche develops these ideas in detail, seeing the ultimate object of criticism as being educative, requiring both interpretation and evaluation. As he develops his argument, he discusses in detail contemporary models of aesthetic evaluation — the sociohistoric paradigm, formalism, culture studies, and deconstruction — thoughtfully reviewing and summarizing the contributions and limitations of each.
In the second part of the book Roche carefully and systematically discusses the categories of the technical age — technical rationality, subjectivity, quantity, autonomous value systems, hubris and impuissance, disenchantment and dissonance, shortsightedness — as well as aesthetics in the technological age. In the third part Roche first explores the value of literature today, the ways in which literature can respond to the technological categories discussed previously by means of intrinsic value, self-transcendence, balance, overarching connections, perspective, inexhaustible meaning, and transhistoricism.
He then examines the relationships between technology, ethics, and literature before discussing the literary canon and the literary critic in the 21st century. There is no inherent reason why he should not do so if he is convinced of its essentiality and primary validity, and his overall argument is coherent and convincing once one accepts his initial premises.
But he is far less critical of his presuppositions - indeed, he is not critical of them at all - than he is of all those movements and trends that tend to ignore or reject those values that he views as being fundamental and essential.
