The book is also an excellent example of the value of qualitative assessment methods, and how they can flesh out and explore psychotherapy processes and outcomes in much more detail than many quantitative methods. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve their psychotherapy skills. One person found this helpful. Brilliant, and beautifully readable. The treatments of seven of Dr. Coughlin Della Selva's patients are presented through detailed session transcripts and commentary which carefully explain the methodology and interventions.

What I particularly appreciated were the detailed follow up reports on each of the 7 patients 4 to 10 years after termination - something I'd never seen before. Treatment results in the 7 cases were dramatic and speak not only to the skill of Dr. Della Selva but to the value of this approach.

I'm sure this will become a classic reference in the field of experiential dynamic work. I've enjoyed the book and found it a useful adjunct to my own ISTDP therapy but navigating it is difficult because the Kindle edition lacks a Table of Contents. This would be easy to rectify and I doubt there is any good excuse for not doing so.
