You need to understand how something works, both thoroughly and deeply, in order to teach it. So it surprised no one when, six months or so after boot camp, I started teaching at the same academy where I had so recently been a student. Not just any mistakes, but the very same mistakes I happened to also stumble through two years ago when I was in that seat.

Making mistakes is a part of all of us learn how to do anything: We literally stumble around, and even fall down, while we are learning how to walk during toddlerhood. Learning to code is the same process: stumble around trying our best, falling down hard on our asses at times, but always getting up and trying again. Until it becomes second nature, and we can do it without thinking about it, and maybe even forget this thing we do all day every day is something we ever had to learn in the first placeā€¦but that is a topic for another time.

In coding, making mistakes and breaking things are a spectacularly effective learning process. Banging your head on your laptop until you find that tiny bug is an essential part of the process of learning how to write better code. My main mistake as a brand new dev was trying to do too much.

Like every new programmer in love with the code, I was super excited about everything I was learning and I wanted to play with all my shiny new toys all at once. And, yes, I learned a lot from fixing said trainwrecks.

However, in the process, I also wasted a lot of time. And then, once those concepts are starting to really sink in, then start mixing things together. Last night I had to challenge a student about why she had not done the homework as assigned. And, since all the code goes on GitHub, I get to see how they go about it, where they start and where they end up and how many iterations it takes. Five of the six students did the homework as assigned. But they all managed to put together reasonable facsimiles of the work as intended.

Number six, though.

Hoo boy. On the supply side, underachieving banks, be they large or small, should be rooted out through merger or liquidation.

In many developing countries, supervisory authorities find it difficult to intervene and dispose of troubled banks' assets quickly. Supervisors in some countries face legal challenges from the owners of such banks, sometimes long after they have left office.

All this impedes the efficient exit and entry of institutions that make for a vibrant local banking sector. Failing local banks should be acquired by stronger local banks or liquidated if no such purchaser can be found. After liquidations well-capitalised new banks should be allowed to enter the sector. Facilitating the creation of new local banks and improving the methods for intervening to deal with troubled banks will encourage competition and provide healthier incentives. That will help banks promote the private-sector-led growth that will be crucial to recovery from the current financial crisis.

Leave the developed markets to worry about how to reform their highly evolved financial systems. To make sustained progress in lifting the weight of the extreme poverty that will remain after the crisis has subsided, low-income countries need to make their financial institutions small and simple.

This is especially true for people who are over their ideal weight, since the impact from running is magnified with weight. The research seems to support this view. A study in found that lifelong marathoners had a significant level of myocardial fibrosis, the very serious and irreversible scarring of the heart valves. Additionally, a variety of studies show that running more than 20 miles per week may undo some of the benefits of regular exercise. The researchers expected to find that the benefits of running would rise to a certain point and then level out, with more running not necessarily giving more benefits.

However, what they actually found was the surprise.
