In the first three months of World War II, she was responsible for sinking nine ships. The British sent three cruisers commanded by Commodore Henry Harwood to confront her. The battle took place on December 13, and the British came out on top. The Graf Spee headed for the neutral harbor of Montevideo, Uruguay. They were given only a short time to effect repairs and the British did their best to make them believe a British fleet of six or eight ships awaited them.

During the battle scenes I had the uneasy feeling someone out of shot was throwing buckets of water in the air to simulate shell-fire. Instead of indulging in Technicolor, I feel the producers should have gone for the harsher monochrome which 'The Cruel Sea' and 'Sink the Bismarck!
Black and white photography also makes the shift between location and studio work much less obvious. There are some good performances in the film, notably Peter Finch as Langsdorff. I remember seeing newsreel footage of the real Langsdorff attending the funeral of his men in Montevideo, he gave a German Naval salute instead of the Nazi version.
His portrayal as a 'decent' German has a basis in fact. The battle of the River Plate was the last Naval action to take place without the benefit of technical advances such as radar. It was a fine piece of seamanship and the story deserved to be told. At the end of this film, unfortunately, you can't help feeling it could have been told better. Sign In.

It had left Germany at the start of the war accompanied by the supply ship Altmark , and succeeded in sinking nine Allied ships in the South Atlantic and Indian Ocean. It had become necessary for the ship to return to Germany for repairs, but before doing so Langsdorff chose to intercept a convoy that he knew to be in the River Plate area. However, Langsdorff had been second-guessed by Commodore Henry Harwood. Intent on pursuing the Graf Spee , he lay in wait with two light cruisers and a larger battleship, Exeter. The Graf Spee saw the Allied ships and cruised straight for them.
Langsdorff thought they were in convoy rather than warships.

They fought for 80 minutes and Langsdorff forced the Exeter to retreat before turning on the two smaller ships, the Ajax and Achilles a New Zealand vessel. Harwood disengaged and it looked as if Langsdorff had won the advantage, but rather than finishing off the battle, he retreated to Montevideo, Uruguay. The damaged Graf Spee could not undertake the return journey to Germany.
Langsdorff had been given three days in harbour by the government of Uruguay. British reinforcements were not due to arrive in the area until 19 December, but Langsdorff supposed that the British were prepared again for battle.
He had been duped by false signals and by the assertion of his gunnery officer that a British cruiser was in the vicinity. He had the order to scuttle his ship if he could not fight his way to freedom.
