So, do yourself a favour and do not overlook this book. You will kick yourself if you do. YA at its best in my opinion. It's not a bad thing at all, me thinks. But I do have to agree with him that it's not purely paranormal. You have the historical factor, which is very prominent and the background of the whole story as it takes place during WWII in London, but don't for one minute go thinking it's boring, 'cause you'd be so wrong.

It's there, but believe me, you aren't going to be taken on a history lesson where the author drones on and on about the same thing.

Far from it. You might actually I hope pick up a few things you didn't know. Some urban fantasy? For sure.

But there's also a darn good dose of horror and darkness. What's not to like? Can you seriously ask for more? I think not. Just don't go thinking that NSFD is your usual vampire story, because you'd be way wrong. It's a book about surviving during a war torn London, it's about a family staying together and helping each other, and it's about a father who has kept many secrets close to his heart.

Especially where her father, Bill, is concerned. NSFD begins with an explanation, which you will understand by the time you reach the end of the book. Elizabeth Wade is just a simple girl. Beth used to have a good friend, Mary, but that friendship ended abruptly; peer pressure and all that horrible, nasty stuff got in the way.

How long will this friendship last, though? Secrets have a way of coming out eventually, don't they? Beth gradually starts becoming ill, and her mom Lynne arranges for blood tests at the hospital she working in. The doctor in charge runs more than one blood test, with quite unbelievable results. Her father, as Beth finds out, has been lying to her all these years and turns out to be the one person who was recruited to kill her kind. Beth loses all trust in him and rightly so, but he eventually resigns himself to the fact that Beth deserves the truth and proceeds to elaborate on this.

Someone is adamant on finding Beth. You have to read this book! Do it. I hope you can feel how passionate I am about this story. If I could, I'd put these words in the author's mouth. Please take notice, because I've created a story for you to enjoy and devour. Mark Ooh, very good question.

About this item

First and foremost I want people to have been entertained. That would be great. The second thing I want is for it to stay with them. For me, a good book and even a good movie will make me think about it for a day or two, or even longer.

If my book stays with people, that would be awesome, too. I have tried to make the book more than just a story. The last thing I would love is for it to be so good that people wanted to read it again. Am I still thinking about it? To continue before I interjected, make no mistake, he has given it his all, but I have a feeling that Mr. Evans is going to top himself and stretch himself even further with the second installment in The Cruentus Saga.

From the manufacturer

And I, for one, cannot wait! NSFD has made it to my favourite books of list - only my sixth. Everything from the writing to the story telling, historical war background, character development, enjoyment, goosebump factor and the way in which certain circumstances are explained and the reason they happened is perfect. Will be remembered. Should be made into a movie. And, everyone from age sixteen and up should read it. This series is headed for great things. Oct 26, Lori Palle rated it it was amazing. This is such a fantastic story! The majority of the story follows the very sweet and gentle Beth Wade as her world comes tumbling down literally from WWII bombs and her slow transition into a vampire.

I liked how there were medical reasonings written into the story as Beth changes. Although this is a vampire story, there are only two or three well-done gruesome scenes that really amped the fear factor without being gratuitous. Also, the depiction of the London bombings is very well written and adds to the story. You get an air of desperation and frustration while reading the story from the hardships of the war. Overall, this is a great character-driven story that also utilizes flashback scenes so we can really experience the story.

I definitely recommend this to horror and vampire fans. Although the main character is thirteen, adults would enjoy reading this story, too. Since this is the first book in a saga, there are many unanswered questions left, but there was satisfactory resolution to make it feel standalone! This is a 5 out of 5 for me. Nov 16, S. Whitaker rated it really liked it. It's a horror story in the high romantic tradition of Stoker, Stevenson, and Shelley.

EIN UNIVERSUM

Evans lays groundwork for a series that promises to grow into a pulpy action horror fun, but his origin story is all character, about an orphaned girl, Beth, who grows into a vampire as she moves into puberty, and the Mark D Evans No Cover From Darkness is a nail biting coming of age novel set among the romantic and dangerous world of World War Two London during the Nazi bombing runs that razed the city.

Evans lays groundwork for a series that promises to grow into a pulpy action horror fun, but his origin story is all character, about an orphaned girl, Beth, who grows into a vampire as she moves into puberty, and the horrors of adult life, and all it's passion and thrill which are mirrored in her vampire awakening. Much of the action of Darkness is inward, and Elizabeth, or Beth, the protagonist is for the most part a normal girl, adopted into a middle class London family at birth, and raised in a sheltered world of school and pesky little brothers.

The Nazis bombing raids reek havoc upon the family's life, and the neighborhood, and between the terrorizing bombs and the aftermath of the explosions, Beth has plenty to worry about. Her friend Mary has lost her parents and takes up home with her family. Her mother works long hours at the hospital, and baby brother Oliver and Beth have to fend a bit for themselves among the hawkish and predatory children of a bombed out London, all the while Beth is dogged by sickness and soon learns she is not what she seems. Evans puts you in the thick of action, and it's in these intense moments where Beth comes of age as the bombs flash, the shelter shakes, and Beth has to face her new identity, vampyre.

There have been sympathetic novels about vampires before, but Evans has not only tweaked the motiff, his setting allows for a layered rich tale. The climactic scene where Beth grapples with her inner vampire nature, the paines of her new vampire body, and the doubts of her human family, the danger outside her is equally real as bombs fall around her. The characters in No Shelter From Darkness face darkness in a variety of forms, Bill, Beth's adopted father becomes the typical distrustful parent most teenagers face, save Bill plays that role because he is a trained vampire hunter, a member of the Ministry, hiding and protecting Beth, or perhaps only coralling her, and keeping her from harming others.

Make no mistake, the action and thrills run like a spike through a vampire's heart in No Shelter from Darkness, and like the gothic novels of the previous centuries, the action is centered in the minds and hearts of the characters. Evans knows that a good thriller starts with an evocative and richly drawn world, and the characters that live there.

Four Stars.
