This work is in two volumes, and the index to the entire two volumes is in Volume 2. The Index contains links to the pages of Volume 2, but it does NOT contain links to the pages of volume 1. The only way to find something in Volume 1 is to do a word search. For a Kindle edition, they should have coordinated the two volumes. Also be advised that the terminology in these volumes is very out of date what you should expect in a Dover edition.

It's best used as a backup reference. One person found this helpful. I bought both volume 1 and volume 2 of this book. What a great book. Brought back nice memories of sitting in the botany lab pulling Bromus rigidus apart for experiments. Once the grass morphology terms clicked into the brain again it was very easy to use. Vol 2 has the glossary and index, so buying both volumes is recommended. This book is very thorough, and gives lots of information on various grasses of the U.

While I haven't used it much yet, it's biggest detriment is that it doesn't have a list or index of common names, so it is very difficult to try to identify a particular grass without using the keys. This is good of course, but isn't what I was looking for in this book. This book and its Volume One companion are not new books, but together they are the definitive study of US grass plants.

Chris Brown - Grass Ain't Greener

These two books are probably a bit much for most people, but if you really are interested in identifying the native grasses, these will do the job for you. As a botany student any publication by Hitchcock is the best. Only comment is that there is additional vital data in the second volume which I was not aware of until I was in the throws of identifying some grasses!! That being said Vol 2 is on my wish list.

When you can't find grasses in other books, this is one of the more comprehensive grass books. This is a must have for anyone who has to identify plants anywhere in the US. There aren't many books out there on this subject. Grasses can be very interesting, especially since most people, when they think of "grass", it's the kind growing in your yard that you have to mow.
