Kaufman of the same name but different content at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society Conference in I feel like something is missing in this discussion. Isn't a muse a person who is attractive not only sexually but also conceptually? That is, a muse to me is someone who embodies a set of problems, ambiguities, issues, concepts, etc. This abstract attraction may be part and parcel of the sexual attraction. I think there is a big difference between making an effort to impress someone via whatever mode available as in the experiment discussed and using your fascination for someone or what they represent to you to catalyze and focus your work.

So let's see if I got this right. A beautiful woman walks into the gym and you I fear you've been a psychologist too long. However, as an aside, while doing some pain studies I discovered that where men might tolerate a dolometer reading of 4 or 5 with me, my sweet young assistant with her clipboard and lab coat could regularly get the same guys up to 7 or 8. What's more, they held in their guts the whole time. Displaying creativity is rewarding in neoteny because it attracts a larger share of maternal resources.

More generally what is being wooed when creativity is displayed is the attention of the Vatsalya bearer. Vatsalya is a Sanskrit word derived from vatsa- a calf- and means maternal care and nurture. The Guru is considered to be the embodiment of vatsalya. The concept of the Buddha field see the Vimalakriti sutra has at its root the vatsalya of the Boddhisatva towards all sentient beings. The Muse, then, has a paradoxical relationship with the artist. She is not his mate but the bearer of vatsalya towards the offspring- the book or picture- of that very maiuetic process whose labour pains she eases.

This is puzzling because most of the passionate poems dedicated to the Khvaja were written by polygamous heterosexuals who have left vast numbers of descendants. On the other hand, to simulate a sort of homo-erotic devotion towards the Master or the Sultan was very rewarding in terms of reproductive success and, furthermore, had Plato's imprimatur. The case of the love of Mahmud of Ghazni and his slave Ayaz may be quoted in this context. Indeed, there is a sort of Darwinian Freudianism e. Christopher Badcock which seeks to throw light on phenomena such as this.

Freud's own reading of Judge Shreber's memoir of his mental illness was creative in a curious sense. His unconscious seeking to form a simulated homo erotic bond rather than paternal, because, thanks to the Oedipus complex, this would involve his own death with 'the Aryan" Jung thus safeguarding the future of his child- Psychoanalysis- as well as the whole sordid story of Sabina Speilrein and Jung's affair which was to culminate in the birth of a Seigfreid- is grotesquely mirrored in Schreber's Memoir.

Underneath all this, we may discern a more universal drive- that of seeking vatsalya bearers for the progeny of one's mind- ontogenetic creativity defending itself against the death which phylogenetic conformity must impose.

This is an old article, but I just came across it now. What has not been mentioned is that women have male muses. It is interesting that you have not mentioned it. I have male muses, and thousands of women also have male muses.

I have found several articles that report on famous women and their male muses. I hope you do not have any women as your clients. A new gene was discovered that is highly sensitive to supportive conditions. The brain can't engage social and mechanical reasoning at the same time. Just because a label has been lifted doesn't make it disappear.

During the production of their second album, Origin of Symmetry , Muse experimented with instrumentation such as a church organ , Mellotron , animal bones, and an expanded drum kit. There was more of Bellamy's falsetto, arpeggiated guitar, and piano playing. On the US leg of the tour, Bellamy injured himself onstage during the opening show in Atlanta; [25] the tour resumed after Bellamy received stitches. In June , Muse headlined the Glastonbury Festival , which they later described as "the best gig of our lives".

It was almost surreal that an hour later his dad died. It was almost not believable. We spent about a week sort of just with Dom trying to support him. I think he was happy that at least his dad got to see him at probably what was the finest moment so far of the band's life.

The album's title and themes reflect the band's interest in science fiction. During the recording of Muse's fifth studio album The Resistance, Wolstenholme checked into rehab to deal with his alcoholism , which was threatening the band's future.

There's something about the fact we all grew up together. We've been together for 18 years now, which is over half our lives. A lot of bands are quite ambitious with their music, mixing lots of different styles — and when I see that I think it's great. I've noticed that kind of thing becoming a bit more mainstream.

Creative economy contributes roughly 3% to SA's GDP. Part 2

For their second album, Origin of Symmetry , Muse wanted to craft a more aggressive sound. In , Wolstenholme said: The heavy stuff really could have been a lot heavier and that's what we want to do with [ Origin of Symmetry ]. Muse's sixth album, The 2nd Law has a broader range of influences, ranging from funk and film scores to electronica and dubstep. Many Muse songs are recognizable by vocalist Matt Bellamy's use of vibrato , falsetto , and melismatic phrasing , influenced by Jeff Buckley.

It has so much feel and flair to it. So maybe that rubbed off somewhere.

Wolstenholme's basslines are a central motif of many Muse songs; the band combines bass guitar with effects and synthesisers to create overdriven fuzz bass tones. Most earlier Muse songs lyrically dealt with introspective themes, including relationships, social alienation, and difficulties they had encountered while trying to establish themselves in their hometown. However, with the band's progress, their song concepts have become more ambitious, addressing issues such as the fear of the evolution of technology in their Origin of Symmetry album.

They deal mainly with the apocalypse in Absolution and with catastrophic war in Black Holes and Revelations The Resistance focused on themes of government oppression, uprising, love, and panspermia. Their sixth studio album, The 2nd Law relates to economics, thermodynamics, and apocalyptic themes. Their latest album, Drones is a concept album that uses autonomous killing drones as a metaphor for brainwashing and loss of empathy.
