Highly recommended for any library. He accepts Stowers's conclusion that the implied audience for Romans was Gentile and argues further that the audience in all of Paul's letters was Gentile. Hence Paul never speaks of the effects of the law upon Jews, but upon Gentiles. This thesis causes Gager to make some unsupportable statements, for example, that Paul preached only to Gentiles in the synagogues! He is likewise forced into some curious readings of the texts. For example, he must read anthropos in Rom. In similar fashion he reads pantes in Rom. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and researchers.

Gager tells us that Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles, not the Jews. His most vehement arguments were directed not against Judaism but against competing apostles in the Jesus movement who demanded that Gentiles be circumcised and conform to Jewish law in order to be saved. Moreover, Paul relied on rhetorical devices that were familiar to his intended audience but opaque to later readers of the letters. As a result, his message has been misunderstood by succeeding generations.

This author is one of the New Perspective Christian scholars. I think John Gager has given us powerful hermeneutic principles for understanding Paul, because when viewed via those lenses, all falls into place and seeming contradictions disappear. For example, Paul is speaking to opponents within the Jesus movement, not to Jews, and is always speaking as apostle to the Gentiles. For another example, Paul's is a gospel of inclusion--not replacement. For example, if an interpretation of Pauline theology is based on a distorted views of Judaism in those days, that intepretation can be presumed to be false.
This is biblical scholarship. Author doesn't just give opinions, he presents his arguments and supports them. In the process he also examines opposing views.
The level is about right if you are an educated layperson. The explication is so clear. Read sometime between mid and mid, in other words, while I was on the now-defunct Visual Bookshelf.
