Some over-the-counter medications, including bismuth subsalicylate Pepto-Bismol and loperamide Immodium , have been shown to decrease the severity of diarrhea, but are only recommended for mild cases. The administration of bovine milk antibodies targeting EPEC has also been effective.
Some top- ics that were incorporated into treatment guidelines developed by the World Health Organization WHO include promoting rapid and effective treatments, increasing the recognition of symptoms associated with severe disease, improving management of infec- tions at home, and providing education on malnutrition risks and prevention practices e.
By incorporating these guidelines into the management and treatment of diarrheal diseases, the lives of many could be saved each year. Such investigations also grant the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of current surveillance systems and establish new guidelines and control methods. The major E. If bacterial con- tamination is present, FSIS will typically institute a recall, or the voluntary removal of contaminated products from the market in an effort to prevent foodborne infections.
For meat, the recall process is made easier because products have a date code, lot number, and, often, a store number, which enables inspectors to locate the contaminated products rapidly. In most situations, however, this is a difficult process, because multiple processing plants, retail stores, and restaurants are often involved. Although each package of ground beef contained spe- cific dates and lot numbers, there was no way to track all of the meat.
In situations like this, FSIS relies heavily on the media and state and local health departments to inform citizens, stores, and restaurant owners of the recall and the potential health risks. Class II: A health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from use of the recalled product.
Class III: A situation where the use of the product will not cause adverse health consequences. One of the largest recalls associated with E.
