As the economic data suggest, the focus and intensity that many young women bring to their careers can diminish as they age and take on more responsibility outside of the workplace. The survey findings illustrate some of the specific challenges women face in accommodating the demands of work and family. When young adults who do not yet have children consider that possibility, most see roadblocks ahead.

There is no gender gap on this question among young adults. Millennial men and women tend to agree that having children will make it harder for them to advance at work. Survey respondents—both men and women—were asked about a series of things they may have done over the course of their working life in order to care for a child or other family member. These included reducing work hours, taking a significant amount of time off from work, quitting a job or turning down a promotion. Parents are significantly more likely than non-parents to have taken these steps. And among parents, a much higher share of mothers than fathers say they have had these types of career interruptions.

The survey finds that by overwhelming margins, adults who have altered their work lives in order to care for family members are glad they did it. But among those who did see an impact, women are more likely than men to say it was negative.

Chapter 1 of the report looks at trends in labor force participation and earnings and explores the demographic, economic and educational explanations for the gender gap in pay. Chapters discuss findings from the new Pew Research Center survey.
