Taxco , If you are a fan of silver, Taxco is within the guerro state and it is just like the silver capital of the world! SO if at a market stall or on the beach and you see somebody selling silver and they say they got it from Taxco, chances are it is fake.
If you really want silver go to a jewlers there. Or if you are going on a day trip to Taxco, get it then at a dealers! Also be carefull what you buy on the beach! It probably has been exposed to the sun all day so it won't be good. Yes, most people in Acapulco and the state of Guerrero are poor.
Many of these poor people earn their living, what little it may be, from selling varous things. Most of the vendors I"ve dealt with over the years have been honest, but there are those others who try to "con" us tourists and local residents, too! Bargaining with taxi drivers is a challenge in ACA, because the city refuses to make the drivers install meters - we're at their mercy.
I think most of the drivers are good folks, but not all. What I do when trying to figure out a price I don't know ahead of time is to stop two, three and even four taxi's. When two three dirvers quote me the same price I figure it's the "going rate" and take it. Foreigners are almost always at a disadvantage, as compared to rates charged local residents. Consider it the "tourist tax" for transport! The rates aren't too expensive though, when we compare them against what we pay at home for traveling a simiar distance.
But, like many other people. I resent someone trying to take advantage of me. About those Mayan Palace timeshare reps. You're right in advising. Although, some people like timeshares, and like the nice facilities at Mayan Palace. It would be good to find a way to strke a "balance". Taxco is a great place to shop for silver. But, few tourists make that journey from Acapulco, and want to find someone in ACA who offers honest value for what's being offered.
