My wife and I are off to Panama for a couple of weeks in We stumbled upon this book while searching for reference material for our trip. Patricia Katzman has a terrifically engaging writing style that makes one want to read the entire book, not just sections that one is traveling too.
There are 73 pages of detailed introductory chapters, how to get there, what to expect. Then each province is discussed in details, including places not to miss, along with those narrow dark streets to avoid. There are 4 sections of full color photos depicting the fascinating people and stunning countryside of Panama. This is by far the most useful and well written guidebook I have ever read and I have read many dozens. Not wanting to burden ourselves we choose to bring just this guide book to Panama on our 2 week long vacation.

It was published recently, in late , so we felt it should be sufficient. While it is packed full of good information and recommendations, it also misses a lot of essential points. For instance, there are very few maps and the ones they did include, have hardly any street names or even neighborhood names that they are rendered utterly useless.
The Panama City map was especially frustrating and we were very fortunate to have picked up a tourist pamphlet that helped us figure out the city. The Index is pretty awful. It appeared to have only the major items and didn't index many sights. You had to thumb through to the town or area and find it yourself.
A lot of the information in the book is already outdated. I think this is just a symptom of how quickly Panama is changing, but we found many hotels and restaurants to be shut down. A final fustration is that sometimes places would be written in their Spanish name in the book and other times as their English translation. I am the travel editor for a national travel magazine and have recently had the priviledge of using Patricia Katzmans excellent guide book to Panama.
First, the cover is outstanding, one of the best I have seen.

I loved all the pictures Second, the print is readable. Third, and most important, I found this guide to be extremely helpful to the average tourist planning a trip. The various areas and activities and the way to reach each destination were well researched. I consider many guide books to be useful only to those who know exactly where they are going probably with a tour and want to read about what they are going to see. Pat writes with a touch of humor and a sense of history that brough each area alive. I had the feeling she knew her subject well and I would be inclined to trust her judgement.
Her chapter on the Darien, even included a few "reasons not to go" or at least, to not go alone. I was very impressed with the amount and detail of information the author offered. I looked at many other guides and none came close. I also carried the book with me in Panama and used it to make sightseeing and dining decisions while I was there.
In my opinion, it's the best guide to Panama available, and I recommended it highly to my readers in the story which resulted from my trip. Briant is always accommodating, professional and extremely punctual. He also speaks perfect English.

I had been planning for sometime an attempt to set the records for crossing the Isthmus of Panama from the Pacific to the Caribbean and return by bicycle roundtrip of miles and cumulative feet of climbing in tropical heat. Am I glad I contacted Mr.

Calvo before attempting to do this without his invaluable help! His excellent knowledge of conditions in both Panama City and rural Panama, and his and Mr. Safety was always of utmost importance with Mr. Calvo and company, and thanks to them, I now not only own the records pending certification for crossing Panama by bicycle from the Pacific to the Caribbean 3 hrs, 43 min , and back 8: Needless to say, this kind of shared adventure engenders a genuine camaraderie not always felt between clients and guides.
Would-be challengers of my records please take note: Calvo has re-evaluated the risks of this kind of extreme sport on the basis of our shared experiences, and determined that the risks are simply too great to attempt again, so. Calvo kindly agreed prior to the attempt to become the only official of the UltraMarathon Cycling Association in all of Panama, the world sanctioning body for these kinds of record attempts, which among other requirements, required him to take an examination on the rather lengthy and technical rules governing record attempts.
Rarely does a UMCA official applicant make on this test. Talk about flexibility and knowledge: As just one other example among many of his willingness to go beyond the call of duty, he also arranged for a high-end back-up bike as insurance in the event of a major failure of my own bike. Yes, it is confirmed, we are not doing this anymore. Sorry to those thinking about challenging the record, and congratulations to the record holder for many years to come! It was truly an honor for us to be able to help out with our small contribution on this important event. I'm in my 50's and I visited Panama for 8 days with my adult daughter.
We prefer to get off the beaten path and learn about the real culture of a country. We also love nature and adventure. Briant arranged our entire trip, including meals, transportation, hotels and tours. He was our personal guide and is incredibly knowledgeable. Our trip was completely personalized and filled to the brim with adventure and discovery. Prior to our visit we emailed back and forth with Briant. All we had to do was ask, and he provided us with the opportunity to fulfill our wishes. The most amazing thing to me was the price.
It was less expensive to have Briant as a personal guide than for me to arrange everything myself and pay as we went.
Plus, Briant is fully bilingual, so we had no language barriers. Here are my recommendations: The view is amazing but the monkeys are the best! They came right up to our boat. If you like adventure, and you are in good shape, take the hikes to the hidden falls and stay in the small mountain hotel. During this part of the trip we really lived and breathed as locals.
You'll get muddy, and you'll use muscles you didn't even know you had, but you'll see the real rain forest.

Take the horse ride through the mountains. Go on the night hike through the rainforest to see the rainforest frogs. We had a local frog caller with us and we saw the elusive, beautiful red-eyed tree frog and many more things. We got soaked int he rain but it was a perfect night for frogs. Take the zipline tour that Briant recommends. The hike through the mountains to get to the zips was amazing in itself.
It included 4 zips. Three are long and one is incredible - It is super long, takes a huge drop beside a waterfall and they will stop you in the middle if you want to take pictures from all sides. Best zip line ever! Take some time in Panama City to eat at local restaruants, shop, visit cultural centers and shop native crafts , go to Old Panama City and see how modern new Panama City is. Panama uses the US dollar so we didn't ahve to worry with exchange rates or getting rid of any exchanged cash before we returned tot he states.
Go to the Carribean side. Most people who visit Panama only see the Pacific side. The water is gorgeous on the Carribean side, and since Briant is a zoologist, he was always finding amazing animals for us to see, either on land or in the ocean. Visit the butterfly farm than Briant set up - you'll get to have a close up view of the rainforest butterflies including the blue morpho, and even get to hold them. Take some time to relax in an all inclusive resort on the Pacific. This is the first time we have had someone arrange our trip for us.
Because of Briant we saw and did more than normal, our trip was perfect, we had no language barrier. Our trip was completely personalized, not touristy at all. Our trip to Panama is one of our favorite all time trips. Thank you very much for your kind words.
