But I would like to get it for the illustrations. View 2 comments. This novella is the first story I have read in the Pern series. As such I was a little confused during the beginning but everything quickly fell in place. I liked the idea of the story, a partnership between dolphins and humans.

Why is Le Guin's hand-drawn map not as famous as her book?

The plot was good too as the dolphins and humans must evacuate the area before a volcano erupts. There was a good blend of action, not too much suspense as none of the characters ever felt like they were in danger. The ending has a romantic relationship budding between This novella is the first story I have read in the Pern series. The ending has a romantic relationship budding between two of the main characters. When I started this book I had no idea were it went in the time line and I had a hell of a time tryig to figure out who were dolphins and if they were realy talking or not.

Once I stoped and took a look at the internet the book got better. It still is a little wierd, it is the first 'prequel' that I read and I don't realy know why we needed it, or for that matter why you would take dolphans into space The Dolphin's Bell is a page novella set in the early days of Pern.

It tells of the second crossing, from the Southern Continent to the Northern Continent. The story runs contemporaneously with the conclusion of the novel Dragonsdawn. It was published as a Wildside Press book, also. This is one action-packed tale. It was my favorite of First Fall. The story of the first settlers from earth. Readers of the Pern series will recognize the names of the characters.

This story takes place on the southern continent at the time of the Volcano eruption. It is a story of the dolphins and the people who saved supplies and lives on their way to the northern continent. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

I have read this book many times and it just doesn't get old. The Dolphins' Bell McCaffrey, Anne a short story of the pern series showing the connection between dolphins and the people of pern. Shelves: read-in This is an enjoyable novella.

Parts of it seem to be resuscitated from editorial cuts out of the longer books in the series, but it makes sense as a story of its own, including a romance in the plot. Nothing fantastic and rather boring since I haven't read the other Pern books in years. I felt like nothing terribly surprising or exciting happened and it was altogether too predictable for my liking, particularly the romantic subplot. One star out of five.

I love this story! Years after the first dragon—rider couples move out of Fort Hold and establish Fort Weyr in a nearby volcanic crater , young queen dragonrider Torene leads the establishment of another draco-human community in a crater far to the north and east, the most distant habitable region. The action at Fort and Benden Weyrs continues Dragonsdawn by showing more of the earliest development of Pern's interspecies society.

Decades later, shortly after the end of the First Pass, this beacon is picked up by a starship in the vicinity of Pern, and a landing party—under the command of Lieutenant Ross Benden, nephew of the Admiral who commanded the Pernese colonization fleet—is sent to respond. A quick survey by Lt. Benden's party finds no sign of human habitation on the Northern Continent, where the colony has taken refuge in caverns, and finds only one surviving family group in the South, at "Honshu" excavation. The now-elderly Stev Kimmer, a greedy and corrupt original colonist, rules over Honshu and his adopted family with an iron fist.

He persuades Lt. Benden that he and the others in Honshu are the only survivors of the biological and geological disaster i. Threadfall , and that they are a group small enough to evacuate entirely.

  • Benden agrees despite his suspicions of Kimmer's true nature, only furthered by speaking to the family that had long lived under his domination, as well as Kimmer's all but openly hostile attitude towards himself as Kimmer holds Benden's long-dead uncle personally responsible for the "destruction" of the colony. The rescue is dramatically successful, though Kimmer is killed when he is shot out of an airlock implied to have been "accidentally" opened by one of his "family".

Scientific investigation of Thread, as well as the belief there are no other humans on the planet—none of the Honshu refugees could refute Kimmer's claim that they were the last survivors of the Pern colony—leads the Federation to place Pern under strict interdict; the system is considered quarantined, all contact forbidden.
