Maybe if she'd been translating something better than misogynistic police fiction it would have worked better for me. I think in the end, the only thing that intrigued me was the concept of how relationships can become intimate ones even when it's not what we desire. Trashy nonsense, with one of those stupid heroines so common in thrillers who does all the stupid things and none of the obvious things because the stupid things spin the plot out further and the obvious things would bring it to a screaming halt.
I'm tired of supposedly titillating woman-in-peril stories. There's nothing sexy about them. This one was more distasteful than most. Aug 18, Tory rated it really liked it. I didn't think the book was easy to read at all, and while the plot was gripping I guess it wasn't something I wanted to read in one sitting, skinny as the novel might be. It was new, I haven't read twelve other books just like it. And the writer's got a great style, am looking forward to reading more by her.

Transgressions starts out as one kind of story, and by the time the changeover happens it's a total blindside. Once again the current of female rage in this novel resonated with me, and there were so many ways I related with the main character.

If I ever have a chance to chat with Sarah Dunant I'm going to ask her which came first, Transgressions, or the novel in the book, and what the process was to create that narrative within the main one.
Highly recommend this one. After reading many Ruth Rendell books I found this just a little too uncomfortably similar. It was written as if it was going to be a screen play. That always puts me off a book.

Had this in the house for years, picked up from Amazon UK, where I got hold of other early Dunant books that I liked much, much more. Do you ever look over your shoulder even though you just looked over your shoulder just to be sure no one is there? This is the basis for this crime novel. A novel translator is completing a new novel well, the translation into English of a new novel and although she finds the subject matter of the novel horrid, she completes it rather quickly.
After which, she feels uncomfortable in previously very comfortable places. Was it just the novel wearing on her or was someone following her? Ooooo… I can feel my heart beating faster just by thinking about it and I know how it ends.

I got very caught up in the story, reading into the early hours The only element which slightly bothered me was the main character's plan to deal with her situation- it didn't strike me as terribly plausible or realistic.
But the I'm rather amused by some of the very negative reviews She raises some thought-provoking questions about sexuality but I don't really understand why that offended so many other readers. I didn't find it a scary read either but that may just be me. Worth reading as a good thriller with a bit if a twist. Are "viol" la metadata?

Feb 26, Jane rated it did not like it. I read this because I loved her historical novels e. However, this is completely different and a very unpleasant book to read. She certainly is able to create an atmosphere of fear and tension but I just don't like reading about violence in that way and won't be reading any more of her 'thrillers'. This was written some time ago so hopefully this style of writing won't be repeated as the more recent novels are excellent. It isn't bad, but it's not good either. I loved The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant, but this wasn't even on the same playing field as far as the writing goes. I do like escaping for a bit, and to its credit, this book does allow for that, but if you don't have time, you'll never muster up the two hours it would take to finish it! It was just awful. I could care less about the main character. I REALLY could care less about the inclusion of the book she was translating and quickly started skipping those parts. I found myself wanted the intruder to just put her out of MY misery already. Mar 15, Snowgirl19 rated it did not like it. Strange things start to happen CDs going missing, or playing when she arrives home , and Elizabeth does not know if it is a ghost, or her ex-husband playing tricks on her, or an intruder. When it's revealed what's behind it, I liked the novel a lot less.

The novel kept me interested, and is certainly a couple steps above the Czech novel within the novel. Feb 16, Laura Cassels rated it liked it. I really enjoyed this book until I got to the ending. I feel this was too farfetched and highly unlikely. However, I liked the idea that was being put forward before the nonsense at the end occurred - that the main character could subconsciously be causing her own problem.
