The Cruise of The Snark

The Cruise of the Snark: Jack London's South Sea Adventure Paperback – August 1, His account of the adventure, The Cruise of the Snark, is a slight, charming work, saturated with the writer's personality and a wonderful display of his eye for poetic and ironic details.

To complicate matters, at least ten of our recruits had been enlisted from the very bushmen ashore who were waiting hungrily for the loot of the tobacco and trade goods and all that we had on board. Occasionally some descriptions seem a tad too detailed, but he assumes that we are interested in how the mind of an adventurer works. London claimed that sailing the Snark gave him a far greater sense of personal accomplishment than writing a book, yet we are glad that he penned this diverting account for us. At least a quarter of the book is spent on Jack's struggles with navigation; first learning the skill, and then applying it to extremely difficult regions of the South Pacific. People who sail will get more out of this than I did.

The best sections of the book are Jack and Charmian's experiences with native islanders, but Jack's descriptions have a callous and superior air to them. I know this wasn't unusual for the period, but Jack's frequent racist or condescending comments about the islanders gets tiring. There is a lively description of "surf-riding" at Waikiki, which Jack tried.

It is amusing to read him introduce this exotic sport to his readers who presumably have never heard of such a thing! Towards the end of the book increasing time is spent discussing the various tropical maladies afflicting the crew of the Snark - recurring fever, ulcers, infected teeth, etc. It's hard to imagine why they continued on with their journey under the circumstances. They were a tough lot, that much is certain. At any rate a mostly enjoyable read. One person found this helpful.

Great read, and afterwards it was fun to search for old news paper articles related to the cruise and compare the stories told by London himself to that reported in major papers. Well, I certainly don't consider myself a book critic. I just want to share with the potential readers of this book with my thoughts.

Rather than calling it a book I would rather consider it a collection of short stories, albeit the stories all took place during Jack London's cruise on Snark which ended in the Solomon Islands. London was certainly a gifted writer and like all gifted story tellers he had a way of drawing the readers into the story as if you are a part of his crew on the Snark.

I particulary enjoyed his last chapter titled "Amature MD" which is absolutely hilarious. I could not stop laughing throughout that story. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Jack London diverges from a successful fiction career with this sailing adventure travelog.

The style and voice he brings to each page refreshes and inspires. Time given to word choice and thought structure, sublime reflection in an unhurried era, shed a ray of hope while I prepare to circumnavigate on my own terms. London is a master of his craft, parsing through events, thoughts and feelings with a finger on the pulse of culture, crew, climate and the journey itself. London weaves his story with seamless threads of poetic and journalistic craftsmanship.
