Is it possible for a serial killer to be a vigilante? : UnresolvedMysteries

I can't think of any who used their serial killing urges for the good of humanity, no. I can think of a lot of one-time killers who did something like this, but the idea of some Dexter or Punisher type above-the-law vigilante avenger, cutting down rapists and gangsters left and right, seems to be mostly a comic book trope. I will say that some serial killers probably think their behavior is justified and the killings they commit are justice. But then again, many people serial killers or otherwise have an extremely skewed idea of who deserves to exist in the world.

Plenty of people think it is acceptable to kill another because they are a different race or religion, or because they hate the opposite sex, or because they hate LGBT people, or because they think sex workers or drug users are disgusting, or because their target is in a rival gang, or because they provide abortions, or because they think their target is "disrespecting" them.

You'll probably notice that there are a lot more people in the world who fit into those categories who are either completely innocent or low-level offenders at worst than there are murderers, rapists, and drug lords. So that means people get killed a lot more for who they are or for living their lives than do get killed for being genuine drains on society.

Elliott Rodger thought his killing spree was justified because in his mind, women were doing him a disservice by not noticing him. There are a lot more Elliott Rodgers out there than Dexters, so the idea of a vigilante serial killer may be an idea best kept to TV and comic books.
