The one that opens the book, a 79 pager, finds Banks revisiting his parents on their 50th anniversary and instantly coming upon a guy named Geoff, who likes to "help" the elderly. Convincing Mom and Dad and other oldsters that the guy's "a bad 'un" won't be easy. The one that closes the book runs 91 pages and tells the story of Banks's last case in London--before moving to Eastvale in Yorkshire where we now know him.

It's also the occasion of his first meeting and pairing with Burgess who'll crop up from time to time in later Banks novels. The other 10 stories run from 6 to 32 pages and cover a range that might surprise you: The pager, and the longest short story in the book puts Banks to work solving the case of an Eastvale poker player's brutally murdered husband.

Another is told in the voice of a teenage girl whose best friend is murdered and how she finds out who dunnit. There's an especially sad tale told by a white friend about his black friend who saw a rape underway and stopped it, only to be accused of being the rapist, not the rescuer. Another involves a man who hears a song he loves so much and wants so bad that he kills to get it. And there are six more I've yet to read. Plenty of time as Amazon is showing the next Banks book not due out until late March Robinson ends the book with an "afterword" about how he came to create each of these 12 stories.
