Every chapter made me want to run to some English classroom and begin teaching. I highly recommend it. After attending a symposium at which Gallagher presented about this very topic, several of the topics he presented in the conference and in this book spent a little under a year simmering in the back of my brain.

I, then, this current school year, took the first step towar I absolutely loved this book and will be including it as a resource for future teaching both in the immediate future and years to come, as long as I teach English and likely even if I transition to teaching history as I desire. I had hoped to use this as a platform for increasing my students' writing fluency yet only writers already inclined, have ever written more than the required five lines. After reading this book, I already have a ton of ideas on how to improve this and hope to take those into this second semester and beyond. I highly recommend this book for all teachers, especially those who teach English.

It's probably the number one thing holding writing instruction back in the classroom in my humble opinion. Gallagher neatly and completely dispels that grade everything myth early on and well.

Additionally, he points out the importance of being a responder and not a grader. Gallagher's choice of student work to exemplify what he's teaching is perfect. It's authentic, funny and shows he has a good relationship with his students and is effectively building them into stronger writers.

This is a great book. If you teach "English" whether reading or writing or hopefully both, you need to read this. Jul 20, Ashley rated it really liked it. This book is not just for English teachers! I really enjoyed this book. Gallagher's writing is both useful and humorous.

I loved all the writing strategies he gives in order to implement the big ideas. I have highlights and post-its all over the book so I can go back and easily find what I most liked. There was one writing prompt that was used in two different strategies so that was a little confusing because I had to go back and hunt for it earlier in the book. There are plenty of great ideas here, and many I will be using this week as we start an analysis unit. It serves as a good framework for increasing writing in the classroom.

I mean here is somebody who not only clearly articulates and well-support belief, but explains how he covers it in his classes and offers ideas as to how you might cover it in your class. The explosion of technology is putting a premium on an individual's capability to communicate: Technology hasn't made the fundamental value or skill easier, if anything it has shined a very bright light on it. You are reading now. Now, go back ten years ago. Go back to when I started teaching seventeen years ago. This did not occur. As Gallagher extrapolates, "All teachers share the responsibility of not only teaching their content, but also promoting the literacy level of students.

Gallagher roots his beliefs in the core value that we are all stakeholders in this process. He offers dozens upon dozens of exercises capable of being used, right out of the book, for any course, any curriculum.

This is worth a first and second look; it is worth placing in your classroom as it will certainly get a lot of use once you crack it open. Who knows, maybe you'll even inspire a colleague to grow from it as well. The bottom line is, kids have to write more than what we are generating nationwide. The national and state scores bear it out. The future, the rate and manner in which technology is hurtling forward It is going to take some dialogue, but it has to start somewhere. Gallagher's book is a solid as start as any I've read. I agree that going through the writing process with students is a good way to model skills and what you expect; also, it is a good way to show them that you make mistakes as a writer too. I have found that my writing skills are diminishing from lack of use. Most of what I currently is directions for assignments, which doesn't allow for much creativity. I have to admit that reading this book prompted me to write this review, whereas I normally would have posted without writing a word. I found myself getting frustrated with some of the notions involving giving comments during the writing process.

The book advocated for reading and commenting upon rough drafts, which I did for two years, and almost drove me crazy. I must admit that the strategies suggested for improvement more thorough that ones I had tried in the past, but the thought alone of how much time the process would take was nightmarish. After talking to my wife about the whole issue, I agree in concept with reading and commenting upon rough drafts, but I only partially agree with this idea in particality.

It would take me a week at the bare minimum to read, comment upon, and return rough drafts, and most of the units I teach are only weeks total. I must say that I found Teaching Adolescent Writers insightful, even when it did push the envelope upon what I thought I could reasonably accomplish in my class. The Power of Choice.
