MacLean reached across the coach, his large, warm hands closing about her waist as he lifted her and placed her in his own lap. He grunted and settled her more firmly in his lap, the muscles of his thighs hard beneath her skirts.
You will unhand me and you will stop this carriage as soon as possible. If you do not, then we when we finally do stop, I will demand your arrest. His powerful arms tightened about her, and she could feel the irritation coming from him in waves, a deep heat that replaced her shivering with another kind. And for what they are, they aren't bad. Well, this one is better than the other one. The trick here is to read them really, really quickly, preferably with a hangover, so that you don't notice any of the truly glaringly awful parts. But they're kind of cute, they're kind of charming and they go down sweetly. Sleepless in Scotland (MacLean Curse, book 4) by Karen Hawkins
I thought the story was okay but I really didn't like Hugh. There is an edge to them that I can't reconcile and made all the other parts hard to swallow. And it seemed to cross a line of inherent decency that couldn't be redeemed in my eyes. Yea, yea, he was nice to adopt the girls that weren't his from a cruel former lover I picked this up after reading the Hurst series, curious about Catriona and Caitlyn. Yea, yea, he was nice to adopt the girls that weren't his from a cruel former lover. Ya, yay, puppies and flowers whatever. It wasn't enough because it just didn't weave together right especially how callously he treated Triona and he regarded her.
He still irritated me. On the other hand, Catriona is a strong spirited woman who isn't your typical bratty overbearing heroine you get either. She was the one who dealt beautifully with the girls. Their interactions are what made the book. I don't know why the MacLean brothers rub me the wrong way. Maybe I missed the build up from the previous books. Apr 18, Maureen Feeney rated it liked it Shelves: Plain Catroinia Hurst hurrys to London to rescue her twin sister Caitlyn from scandal.
On arrival she learns that Cait is trying to trap Alexander MacLean into marraige. Hugh MacLean has also heard of Cait's plan to trick his brother. In trying to rescue their sister and brother, they end up mistaking each other for their siblings. Hugh and Triona are caught in a compromising situation and have to marry.
They agree the marraige is only for a couple of months to quench rumours but as they arrive Plain Catroinia Hurst hurrys to London to rescue her twin sister Caitlyn from scandal. They agree the marraige is only for a couple of months to quench rumours but as they arrive at Hughs home she is met by his 3 daughters? They soon find that love grows from passion. Very good read with a lot of passion and I really liked Triona and Hugh. The real angst I had with this was the relationship with Hugh and the girls could have been elaborated on.
How did he end up with them, etc? A nice light easy read with good secondry characters Jul 15, Natasha rated it liked it. Karen Hawkins is a must read author. Everytime I pick up a book of hers, I know I'm in for a good read. Catriona was a pleasent character to read. Smart, funny, realistic and accommodable. Not many ladies back then would sit in a carriage for days without much rest or comfort. Catriona was reasonable and charming.

I have two yet to read and I wish there were more. If you're looking for a quick, light romance with handsome, witty, charming Scottish males and an over all great cast of characters, then this is the read for you! Feb 19, Robyn rated it it was ok Shelves: Disappointing it had the bones of a good story, it could have been so much better but just kept missing the mark.
Unrealistic and naive behaviour by the main protagonists. Rather than a hero I thought he was a selfish shit who made no attempt to care for or make welcome his wife. Instead he only wanted someone to warm his bed for a few months and then he was throwing her out to live on the mercy of her family.
Hugh con "la ciocca argentea che scintilla, come animata di vita propria",che scatena venti impetuosi, padre affettuoso,un mix irresistibile. Una trama originale con una protagonista decisa a conquistare il suo sposo. Sep 29, Bobby rated it did not like it. Pretty sure I couldn't be arsed trying to get some uptight, autocratic man and his spoilt kids to like me tbh. Hugh didn't have all that much going for him in the first place and it all went downhill from there. I only kept reading for the angst. Aug 06, Lorna added it.
I was looking to read a historical scottish romance. This was a fun read but not so much of the scottish highlander background I was looking for. Nov 18, Kimmy rated it it was ok. The love blossoming is so weird. I think it was explained very odd. The way one tries to save the other twin but by some twisted fate the other twin wasn't even there?
May 04, Shalon rated it it was ok. Feb 21, Hanan rated it did not like it Shelves: ALL books in this series are the same: I love the fact that Karen Hawkins uses Scottish accent in her writing. It adds something to the setting.
Dec 04, Chrissi rated it liked it Shelves: Apr 11, Iza Soares rated it it was amazing Shelves: Rating 6 of 7 I honestly think it was my favourite til now. My only complaint is that I was expecting Clarissa showing up and Catriona defending the girls and not letting they go. But honestly I loved this one so fucking much.
Jul 11, Tammy Lyn rated it really liked it. Love the twin sisters probably because I'm a twin. Aug 30, Sandra Walker rated it really liked it. Funny and good, I liked it a lot. I read the first book in this series like years ago. From what I can remember, I enjoyed it, but the series must've slipped my mind, because I've never sought out any of the others. Then back in December or January, in a thread about older heroes and younger heroines, someone mentioned The Laird Who Loved Me and it caught my attention. I decided I wanted to read it, and put it on my wishlist, along with the others in the series.
I just so happened to find this one first. I usually hate reading series out of order, but I went ahead and read this one anyway. I shouldn't have, to be honest, because there's loads of mentions of the hero's siblings whose stories were told in the earlier books , as well as the MacLean curse being treated as if I should already know all about it and the clan's history. So, really, I should've went back and re-read 1 and found 2 and 3 before reading this one.

It was still enjoyable though, but because, I'm guessing, so much characterization and explanation already occurred in the earlier books, I sorta felt like an outsider instead of a friend of the family. So I definitely need to find the rest of the series! As for the characters in this book, they were both likable and decent people, almost sort of too much so. They developed their feelings for each other rather fast considering they'd never met before, then three days later they're married. The lust and sexual bits came super quick, they were lusting after each other as soon as they met, and though their marriage was forced to hush a scandal, they had no problem getting along in the bedroom from the first go.
And that was ok I guess. The main conflict comes from Hugh's daughters, three girls who've been hurt before, so he's desperate to protect them. He plans for Caitriona to only stay long enough for the gossip to die down, and then they'll return to their previous lives. So he doesn't want the girls and Caitriona to get close, so they won't be sad when she leaves. But of course the plan goes awry, and the girls try to push Triona out sooner than planned. They don't want her and their Papa to fall in love and abandon them like their mother had a habit of doing.
So they plot mischief to get her in trouble with Hugh, but he's wise to it, and always knows it's them. Their antics are nothing wicked or dangerous, just silly things like moving furniture and mishaps with food. Hugh, meanwhile, has loads of fun with his wife in the bedroom, but won't let her into his life in any other way, and Triona soon discovers she wants it all.
She asks advice of her wise old Mam and enlists the servants to her side. All in all it goes pretty easy, and there's not a whole lot of conflict aside from stubbornness from the girls, and the wee little thing about Hugh's and all the MacLeans temper causing storms. I'm guessing this is all gone over more thoroughly in the other books.
I'm eager to find them and meet the others, learn their stories, piece it all together. Altogether this one was good. I liked the characters, though I wouldn't have been averse to getting to know them a whole lot better. This story was definitely a lot lighter and fluffier than the last book I read, and that's not a bad thing.
They can't all be dark and gritty and angst-y. The love scenes in this book were also pretty tame. Not PG, but nowhere near hot and steamy either. I'd give 'em a 5 on a scale of 1 being super-tame and 10 being erotic smut. Not really written too purple-y though, just kinda soft, 'unseen but we all know what's happening' kind of details, or really, lack of them. Aug 19, Paranormal Romance rated it really liked it Shelves: Known as the responsible twin, the good twin, the twin who never got into trouble or caused trouble- the heroine has suddenly found herself in the deepest of trouble.
