Contents Cracking in pavements: Assessment and evaluation of the crack potential - A. Mitigation, Risk Assessment and Prevention. The preservation of the patrimony that represents the road network is a challenge for our modern societies. Developing efficient construction methods able to guarantee long life structures without spoiling natural resources and destroying the environment is more than ever, a major requirement nowadays. Cracking is certainly to be considered as one of the main causes of pavement deterioration and a great part of the enormous funds spent each year on repairing and maintaining cracked pavements are astronomical.

There is no doubt that such arguments justify any effort that is put on promoting research and development in the field of pavement cracking. In preparing this Fifth RILEM Conference the organizers were not only intended to repeat a traditional event which might be the opportunity to look back on the results of full scale experiments.

They wanted rather to extend the scope of the conference to cracking problems in a more general sense including other modes of cracking such as fatigue, ageing or top-down cracking.

New issues to which practitioners are confronted were also addressed such as performance guarantees, evaluation of risk and probabilistic design. In many countries indeed there is a trend to involve contractor's responsibilities more deeply in the long term by including long term maintenance in the contracts.

Hence the seven main topics selected to prepare the conference were: This illustrates the growing interest in this topic and confirms the need for better modeling and prediction of crack initiation and propagation in pavements. These proceedings provide a unique source of theoretical modeling, experimental approaches, field studies, and rehabilitation techniques of pavement cracks.

Summary Crack reflection through a road structure is one of the main causes of premature pavement deterioration. This is a widespread problem in many countries and highway maintenance authorities are having to find economic means of repairing and upgrading their pavements.
