A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC

Have you done any timing on this? I have done some, but didn't keep the results. But my impression is that RAM size and disk speed are relatively less important for save times, and that multiple processors cores are not helpful at all. What I find is that my save times for a 3GB file are about 20 minutes, which is a write speed of about 2.

So I don't think write time should have anything to do with it. The time it would take to read data out of a disk cache, put it into memory, and write it back out should be a short fraction of the save time.

I do find that maximize compatibility does affect things. However, I always leave this on for big files, as I like to be able to use the Finder to remind me which file is which, without firing up Photoshop and waiting 10 minutes for the file to open. I find it always saves me time in the long run to "Maximize compatibility.

Now, not being a Photoshop Engineer, what I think is going on is that Photoshop is trying to compress the file when it saves it, and the compression is very slow. It also has no parallel processing as noted from processor utilization rates in Activity Monitor.

Editorial Reviews

I suspect that the save code is very old, and that Adobe is loathe to change it because introducing bugs into saving makes for very unhappy customers. I know, I was bitten by a save bug once in? Or, maybe somebody could come up with a TIFF replacement for files bigger than 4GB, and I could then saved uncompressed in that new "large-tiff" format. My only complaint about the book is that the binding on my copy is horrible. The darn thing is falling apart. Photoshop is a deep product, and if you have been working with it for a while you likely already have a number of very thick How-To books. Being reluctant to purchase yet another thick, expensive Photoshop book, I picked up this.

Covers all the new stuff in depth, and better than some of the other books I have. I didn't experience any quality issues as mentioned in other reviews. Forget the 2 inch thick 'bibles'. This book will give you the best start in picking up PS CS3. This book is a great buy.

See a Problem?

My book was bound OK - no problems there. As usual Ben Wilmore brings you up to speed quickly. High quality content is what we have come to expect from Mr. Wilmore and in the past Peachpit has provided a quality home for quality content, but not this time.

I read one review that suggested the poor quality binding was due to the publication having the wrong number of pages! The publisher had at least one other option, they could have used a spiral binding if they couldn't do anything else. And for that reviewer who seemed to wonder if the readers were more interested in the construction than the content; I'm interested in both, I paid for both.

Peachpit needs to fix the binding problem and offer a replacement to those who have already purchased. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I returned this product because the examples shown in the book utilize images from the DVD which you do not get with the Kindle edition. Ben Willmore writes an indepth, fun review of the new aspects of Photoshop CS3.

It is extremely thorough and well thought-out and especially appropriate for those already familiar with CS2. I highly recommend it! A good quick presentation of the new features of the Photoshop CS3 upgrade. You need to be knowledgeable of CS2 to use this book. See all 19 reviews.
