The movie follows four babies from birth around the world, two in affluent societies - USA and Japan, and two in rural poor locations - Mongolia and Namibia. The whole movie is short video clips without narration. It moves quickly between the different locations, highlighting similarities and differences. It's an interesting concept, and there are cute moments, but sorry to say that overall it's quite boring.

A friend highly recommended Babies. A documentary look at babies from wide-ranging cultures in their first formative year, I kind of liked that there was no subtitles. Other than that, you see and hear it as the babies do, without translation. I enjoyed it very much. I give this DVD to all the first time parents I know.. I think its very reassuring to see how well babies developed within a huge range of parenting styles!
