I thought that the first chapter the last scene would eventually turn out to be the second to last scene. Because the last scene only ends with one of the characters walking into a room with a gun.

No one dies, no resolution is given to the kidnapping threading the entire plot, no October list information is revealed. Early in the book, this bothered me. But by the end of the book it will make sense no spoilers, but the pictures do mean something and Deaver saves the titles of each photo for the very end, titles which would give away their meaning.

Use the pictures preceding each chapter as a clue and try and figure it out as you read along. Also, pay very close attention to the dialogue.

The October List by Jeffery Deaver

There is resolution to the story, and hats off to Deaver for accomplishing it without so much as a written bullet fired. Chapters jump from action to action, leaving huge chunks of exposition and explanation invisible. Frustrating, because if at the end of one scene two characters walk in to confront the kidnapper, then the next scene ends as those two characters are getting ready to leave a hotel room, the reader has been left with a huge chunk of drama — the confrontation with the kidnapper — left to figure out themselves.

Very dangerous for an author to do. But again this requires some patience.

After reading the ending, it will make sense. Words are appropriately written backwards or mirror image hinting at what may be behind the October List.

Without giving anything away, you will see this same writing — written normally — late in the novel where it will make sense. I have to laugh at some reviews that call the characters flat, one-dimensional, unbelievable based on their motives or actions. Deaver has made an art of manipulating reader expectations using characters.

Characters are tools in tricking readers and setting up twists. It succeeds in that respect. I reached the end and was pleasantly surprised at the twists of character and plot. I had guessed at some of it, but not completely, and that is always a joy as a reader.
