Most books about beer focus on the beverage itself, how to make it and how to buy it. Notes on a Beermat , the only Canadian book of its kind, explains how to drink beer and why it is absolutely necessary. This in turn transformed early man from the hunter-gatherer to the agriculturist. Even then, beer was making people smarter. So this fellow walks into a bar, right? Then he walks into another bar.

And yet another bar. Repeat this action for 35 years. This is a book about drinking. This is not one of those books.

Mar 25, Rodney Gitzel rated it really liked it. A fun read. The rest is a "tour" of Canada, which had been envious of Montreal. That is until he got to Vancouver and it turns out we're beer nirvana for Canada! Oct 22, Rachel rated it liked it. I really enjoyed the first half of the book when it was focused on the history, but eventually the book felt off trend and hard to follow.

The history was very well written but his personal outlooks of modern brewing industry and his travels were dense and less interesting. Would have rated it higher if the editor had cut a good third of the book out entirely. Read it, loved it, want to get his other book. But it was still informative and interesting, and it was SO nice to see someone else comment on the fake Keith's tour.

I also particularly enjoyed that he went on a cross-country beer mission. I've tried a lot of what he suggests, and was able to add a few more to my list of "need to sample". Feb 26, Chris Johnson rated it liked it. So far it's way more interesting than I thought at first glance.

As I work my way towards the end it's becoming a bit of a slog. A bunch of the later chapters could have been cut. Had to skim through the last few chapters.
