Her most recent novel is the genre-spanning The Dream Daughter. Diane likes to write complex stories about relationships between men and women, parents and children, brothers and sisters, and friends. Although the thematic focus of her books often revolves around family, love, compassion and forgiveness, her stories usually feature a combination of drama, mystery, secrets and intrigue.
Diane's background in psychology has given her a keen interest in understanding the way people tick, as well as the background necessary to create her realistic characters. She also lived for many years in San Diego and northern Virginia before making North Carolina her home. Diane received her bachelor's and master's degrees in clinical social work from San Diego State University. All the while Diane was writing on the side.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. A friend introduced me to Diane Chamberlain, and I will be eternally grateful to her. I have read about 10 of Diane Chamberlain's books so far and each one is of such a high standard, I have never been disappointed. This is the second book featuring these characters, so it would be wise to read Before The Storm first.
The sense of drama and suspense is very strong in both books. The characters are well developed, believable and annoying only in the way other human beings can be The author always picks dramatic real locations, which add to the plot. This story features one of the characters being released from prison and how this impacts on the rest of the family and community. This is part two in the Topsail Island novels so make sure you read Before the Storm first. Diane says that Secrets She Left Behind can be read as a stand alone book, but I think you will enjoy it so much better if you read book one first.
I found it difficult to get into at first, but once I got engrossed into it I had to keep reading until I got to the end. Some interesting twists and turns. This book can be read as a stand alone novel or a sequel to the first Topsail Island Novel. I read it immediately after the first. It begins when the person partially responsible for a tragic fire returns home to the island. The first story was mainly from the perspective of Laurel, whose husband had died tragically young and had brought up two children. She had a good, loyal friend in Sara, herself a single mother, who had helped her through a dreadful time In her life.
Right up until and after the fire. This second book, whilst continuing from where the first ended with all the repercussions, also goes back and fro in time via Sara's memoirs, giving a different perspective on the events which were described n the first novel.
