Ola states; "Hands-on, self-sufficiency has always been my mantra for survival in the music game. I always felt like the creative parts of song writing, producing and recording were merely different stages of a single process". Technical support of this kind has given Ola new possibilities in the production and recording of his latest album PointLess. It is an activist's call - at once a celebration of life and a cautionary take on the social forces that threaten it.

Violence, immigration, xenophobia, betrayal, and dignity are themes considered on Point Less, rendered with a powerful and knowing generosity of spirit. Onabule is rueful yet optimistic. But what social sensitivity in conjunction with a winning, emotionally charged voice there are parallels. The now internationally acclaimed artist communicates his songs with a pleasantly bright baritone, a soul to jazz oriented voice. His arrangements are just as variable between Modern Soul, Funk and jazzy Habitus.

It is an activist's call — at once a celebration of life and a cautionary take on the social forces that threaten it. That decided, the next question was how do we choose, all of the albums that we have featured over the year have been great albums and given free rein this list would end up very long list indeed. For the sake of transparency, we decided to look at the albums that generated the greatest attention from you, our followers. We looked at the number of plays generated on our playlists, the highest reader engagement across all of our Social Media accounts and the number of views on the website.

Note, the albums are not presented in any particular order of merit. Mark Sullivan - Another year, another diverse group of releases. There were an unusual percentage of albums outside of jazz for me this year, for whatever reason. This is a chronological list, not a ranking. A bold and powerful nation with imperial ambitions must confront the fact that absolute power may not always equate to certain victory. It must come to terms with the possibility that in this world, other forms of strength and resilience exist. Sublime and transcendental forces, unseen by the naked eye, but infinitely more effective at motivating hearts and minds than brutish strength and bombast.

Violence, immigration, xenophobia, betrayal, and dignity are themes considered and rendered with a powerful and knowing generosity of spirit. His three-and-a-half octave baritone and the powerful emotions he conveys with it connects with audiences around the world. Ola Onabule has built an enviable career as an international touring performer and has now turned his attention to the North American market with a newly recorded collection of original songs. Listen to the attached interview. After a tragic loss, a parent is inundated with words of condolences and must ponder the real value and meaning of these words. Are they meant in all sincerity or are they just platitudes? Are these words spoken merely to salve the conscience of the well-wisher.

In situations where the tragedy is avoidable, Can the energy expended in composing theses elaborately worded but useless phrases be put into preventing the sad event in the first place. Do words have any meaning if they are un-yoked from deeds and action. His music has gained inspiration from jazz, soul, pop and world styles. His new studio record is entitled "Point Less," and is a heavy album, worthy of your listening attention. You're hearing the interview right here on The Paul Leslie Hour. A new voice in the soul jazz genre somewhere between Al Jarreau, Marvin Gaye, George Benson and Youssouf N'Dour is always welcome, especially if the songs - like here - are produced with great care and have power and independence beyond a feel good mood. Emotional, black soul is still the main thing, but his current album Point Less contains, one could almost say, under the guise of the catchy jazz owner. Afro- and Ethno Soul, very serious and highly meaningful socio-political messages.

The lyrics are partly of an almost lyrical complexity and in contrast to the music not exactly easy access themselves, but almost all songs address social distortions such as the increasing violence between cultures, xenophobia or attacks on human dignity. Onabule again wrote all the songs himself and produced the record himself on his own label, so one can assume that he consciously gave the serious and demanding lyrics a harmonious, swinging, almost cheerful musical form.

Should these songs then reach a few people more than the circles they look at - all the better. With his bright, sensitive but unsentimental baritone voice Onabule Bein has become best known to us through his various appearances with the big bands of WDR HR and SWR or through his collaboration with the Filmorchester Babelsberg.

These new 14 tracks, recorded with different studio musicians, with a perfect sometimes for the jazzhorer perhaps almost smoothed sound, are in any case best suited to give this engaged black Afro Soul voice a coarser popularity. Deserves Onabule. It takes an askance look at all the counter-intuitive scenarios that a member of such a group may find themselves in. It explores how such scenarios can rapidly descend into unexpected and sometimes dire consequences.
