Captain America: White #1 (of 5)

This is turning out to be a good month for infamously unfinished comic book series. Hot on the heels of the new Miracleman comic, Marvel is finally delivering the much-hyped, much-delayed Captain America: White.

The Issue at Hand: Captain America: White #1

The series was first announced way back in , in a time before Cap was a Hollywood superstar and when writer Ed Brubaker was just establishing Bucky Barnes as the heir to the Cap mantle. Since then, only the 0 preview issue and a Howling Commandos tie-in comic have been released.

Captain America: White #1 Preview Released

But for hungry Cap fans, the wait is finally over. As for whether issue 1 is worth the incredibly long wait, that depends mainly on what you're expecting out of the book. In this tale, Captain America attempts to deal with the death of his best friend and former sidekick Bucky Barnes.

He looks back on his early days with Bucky, getting the suit and going behind enemy lines in France with Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos. Loeb, as always, finds a way to take a story we all know and make it break our hearts all over again. Over the course of five issues, we see the father-like figure Steve was to Bucky and the relationship that grew in the face of war.

Captain America: White #5

Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos are given more than a few moments to shine. But Fabok's choice of imagery - and colorist Brad Anderson's arresting use of reds and blacks - makes this book feel like a blockbuster.

That said, some readers may notice a little bit of a slowdown with this issue, which is to be expected - Johns has already launched his opening salvo with the new New Gods, and now he's laying down exposition to get us to the big final battle against the Anti-Monitor. As a result, there's a little bit of place-setting going on here, as Johns swiftly reestablishes the characters of the Injustice League, sidelining characters such as Power Ring and Cyborg swiftly.

Yet I believe this is all part of the slow and steady remixing of DC's Mightiest Heroes - I have the feeling that when the dust clears, we might have some very different views on good and evil in the DC Universe, something that the original Forever Evil strove so hard to achieve. Assembling DC Comics' best and brightest is a daunting task, but if there's any creator who has proven himself time and time again that he is worthy of the task, it's Geoff Johns.

Justice League continues to have the perfect mix of heady mythology, pitch-perfect character moments, and big twists and turns. While this issue might push the brakes a bit, just think of it as a necessary evil - that is, until the real bad guys show up. By now, we all know the tragic tale of Bucky Barnes.
